Moving and Re-installing Plex Media Server

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486 on a WD PR2100 NAS Server
Player Version#: 9.13.1.37459 on a Fire Cube V2

What is the correct way to radically (i.e., totally ) remove the WD-PR4100 Server version then re-installing it so that nothing from the previous installation is remembered? Originally it was working OK then something happened and I just re-installed it. I ended up with the NAS showing twice in the listings and when trying to play a recording I get the message of “Error Loading Content”. Thus, unless this anomaly can be corrected, the Plex system is of no use. Please help, thanks. Joe

See if this helps:

That is correct. Uninstalling PMS from the WD will remove the data. Reinstalling will treat it as a new server. Uninstalling does not remove the old server from your account, you need to manually do that from your Authorized Devices page in Plex Web.

I get the message of “Error Loading Content”

Either the client app on your Fire Cube is still trying to access the old server or there is some bug. Try removing the old server first. Then reproduce the error and provide your android logs and your server logs.

Hello Tony_T,

Many thanks for the hints and guidance you mentioned, they worked to restore the functionality of the Plex Server System.

Here is the sequence of steps which proved successful:

  1. Force stop and clean the cache in the Plex app in the Fire-TV then uninstall the Plex App.

  2. Sign out of the Plex App in the WD-PR4100 NAS then stop the Plex App in the config of the App

  3. Uninstall the Plex App from the NAS with the Uninstall utility in the Apps section of the NAS

  4. THIS NEXT STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT! REBOOT THE NAS EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE NOT PROMPTED TO DO SO!

  5. Download the LATEST version of the Plex App from the Plex site, not the NAS Library.

  6. Install manually the just downloaded (from the Plex site) the latest App. Start setting up the Plex server App as for the first time.

  7. Download the latest Plex App for the Fire-TV and install it. Sign in with your credentials.

  8. The Plex system on the WD-PR2100 NAS now works again in the recording and play mode.

I still have an outstanding problem with Plex: Even though I have invoked the “Find and Delete” (or so) commercials option in the DVR detailed Scheduling, are there other locations where I need to change some settings for the commercials to be automatically removed during playback?

Thanks,

Joe

If you have the setting enabled and it is working, the commercials are deleted from the file so during playback, they will just be gone. You won’t see the option to skip ads. This removal is done after the recording is finished. If this is not working, please provide me your server logs a few minutes after a show is finished recording so I can check if the process ran or not. Let me know what show/movie just recorded.

Also note that although this setting is at the main DVR settings, there is an override for each recording. Please double check that this is still enabled for the recording before it starts.

Thanks again for your quick reply. Let me “catch one” then will send you the logs, give me a few days. Thanks,

Joe

Hello Again, Here is this morning’s log containing recordings of CBS News and ABC’s GMA. Neither of them wanted to play until the recording schedule ended at 9 am.

I am trying to be patient and debug it but it certainly looks like that I am playing whack-a-mole here.

Some commercials are not skipped because they are framed by the weather report so it looks like real program rather than a disguised commercial.

Thanks for all your help.

Joe

You have verbose logging enabled so your logs are rolling over too fast. It missed the recording period. Please turn off verbose and restart PMS. Get me a new log after the next recording.

Here is this morning’s log in the non-verbose mode about recording CBS Morning News and ABC 's GMA, both from 7am-9am.

The situation is consistent: Auto skips the first commercial then it gets confused by auto skipping all the way to the last program portion while skipping several commercial and program portions in the middle. Thanks for your help,

You still have verbose logging enabled, or you didn’t restart PMS after making that change.

Luckily your logs do contain the ending of the recording. I found Good Morning America and it finished recording at 9 am, then started the commercial detection process. Your logs stop at 9:06. I don’t see anything about the results of the detection so either the process is still running or it failed and did not produce an error.

Can you grab the logs again, don’t worry about the verbose issue. I want to check after 9:06 to see what if the process finished.

I don’t understand this. There is no auto skip feature. You’ve set the option to remove commercials, so they should be gone from the video itself, not being auto skipped. If you are seeing some commercials but not others, then it’s a comskip issue and not a PMS issue. Comskip is not perfect and the configuration may need to be changed. See the very bottom of https://support.plex.tv/articles/115003944134-removing-commercials/.

Let me know if this is the case. I thought the issue was no commercials are being detected, so I was checking if the detection was even running, which it does appear to do.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Here is the log as of now at 1:38 pm. There was no recording since it was turned off after 9 am.

I also apologize for not being clear enough in my earlier narrative, so I will try again now by re-phrasing the narrative.

The first commercial is auto skipped, the newscaster does say “we will be back after a commercial break an the play of the newscast resumes correctly. When the newscaster announces the 2nd commercial break, the rest of the commercials and the remaining newscast material is also skipped to the last portion of the newscast when the newscaster says " thanks for watching”, etc.

Does it make more sense now?

Thanks,

Joe

What did you turn off?

The new logs show that comskip is running on the show CBS Mornings, but I don’t see anything on Good Morning America.

Does it make more sense now?

This sounds like comskip is running but not detecting the commercials properly. This seems more like a comskip issue. You might need to change some of the configurations as I mentioned before. I’m not a comskip expert so I can’t help. Maybe worth asking in their forums Comskip Support Forum - Index page.

Your link for the Comskip section was very useful. There are somewhere over 954 very similar complaints and observations as mine. Here is an example:

The most obvious reason for not detecting anything is a ticker tape or otherwise permanently visible thingy on screen.

That is possible, I’ve noticed more banners lately at the bottom of the screen advertising upcoming shows. We’ve also been having a lot of weather warnings lately.
Do you have some recommended setting changes to address this?

I really want to thank you for all the help provided. I am not sure if I want to pursue this aspect since I found the PlayOnHome option as an alternative. Their algorithms can successfully skip all the commercials, however, the drawback is that they download the recorded shows on the local computer and are not playable until fully downloaded! The Plex system allows to start playing from the beginning anytime during the shows real time broadcast but have to use manual Comskip with the FF button. I have now some thinking to do as to what we really want.

Thanks and best regards,

Joe
