Multi disc in one ablum shows as multiple albums

Over the moon this issue has been addressed. Still loving Plex sooo much.

Still patiently waiting for the Xbox client to support Music too. [emoji1]

Hi,
Each time I have an album with several artists, it’s split in several albums.
I don’t want to loose the information of the artist by setting “Various Artists” on each track, just to let plex merge everything in one album…

Any idea for me? (I’ve the last version currently)
Thanks

You don’t lose information.
There are 2 artist tags:
Track artist ← this is the one you already know
and
Album artist ← this is the one you must set to ‘Various artists’ if you have a sampler album

Ok thanks,

I will check that.
Just to understand fine, when we edit a track in plex, do we update id3 tags of the real file or just the plex db?

Thanks

Ok,

I have checked, it works and it doesn’t modify id3 tags…
I would have prefer it to modify id3 tags in fact.
So finally, I have another little problem. Let’s say instead of edit the tracks in plex I update id3 tags and update the library, it should also work I guess?
But which id3 tags should I use for “album artist” and “track artist” in order to let plex recognize everything correctly?

You must edit the id3 tags of your files directly i.e. not from within plex.
Follow the link I set above.

Yep ok thanks,

There is still one thing.
Once I modify id3 tags, even if I rescan my lib, plex doesn’t seem to update its metadata.
Is there a way to do this?

You can merge albums in Plex simply by selecting tracks, editing them, and setting the album name to the one you want to merge them with.

Yes,

But I know that I will keep my files, whereas I don’t know how much time I will keep plex.
Once the modifications are done on id3 tags, I would prefer plex to update itself its metadata instead of editing once again manually in Plex…

No way to do that?

I am using the program “Tag 'N Rename” which does a fabulous job allowing you to edit all the tag fields. I have wrestled with this problem of multiple discs for a single album testing various ways of tagging as well as various directory structures.

Under artist name, I have created the albums as “year - title” and then when there are multiple discs, I create sub-directories for each disc: Disc 01, Disc 02. Tag 'N Rename makes doing this quite easy!

I have gone so far as to change such things as the disc meta-data from 01/02, 02/02 to 1/2, 2/2. I refresh the music library and then delete the trash. I have even removed the album from PLEX’s library, refreshing and deleting the trash and then reintroducing the album after effecting changes and refreshing .

Simply put, sometimes the album displays properly with the discs all together under one album jacket; other times NOT. I am strongly suspecting at this juncture that the culprit is coming from the AGENTS SETTINGS. I believe that I have set those settings to NOT consult meta-tags from external sources but am uncertain. Any advice here would be helpful keeping in mind that I am a Plex Pass subscribing member.

Thanks for any helpful suggestions, folks.

This may cause you problems.
Year belongs into parentheses.
Either this way AlbumTitle (year)
or this way AlbumArtist - AlbumTitle (year)

Unnecessary.

The proper procedure is called Plex Dance. With music, you can omit step 4

There are a couple of things to do to make sure Plex is looking at your embedded tags first. Follow the steps in this post. I don’t think you can tell Plex to NOT consult external sources, but this will tell Plex to look at external sources only when your local tags are missing.

If your tags are in good order, the naming of the files should be unimportant. And, yes, you’ll need to use the Plex Dance workaround, since the Refresh command in Plex doesn’t work.

I have just now installed Eartha Kitt’s album “Eartha-Quake”. This album has five discs. Having processed all the tags, I moved the album and its discs to the music directory that PLEX monitors. The directory structure was Artist -> Album -> Disc 1 … Disc 5. The end result was dismal! There were two and then three album jackets with some discs included-- none in order! First jacket had Disc 1 and Disc 4; Second jacket Disc 3-- Third jacket Disc 2 and Disc 5.

I removed the album and had PLEX rescan the music directory. Then I deleted the trash.

Now, this time, I created the album directory in the PLEX monitored music directory and moved Disc 1 over. I waited and watched the browser display for this first disc to appear. Once the first disc appeared on my Roku PLEX, I moved disc 2 into the PLEX monitored music directory and once again, waited. This time, disc 2 attached to the album successfully when checking my Roku PLEX. I repeated this process for the remaining discs and was successful! ALL FIVE DISCS APPEARED UNDER THE ONE ALBUM JACKET.

I have done another six or so albums with multiple discs. Processing as I’ve stipulated in my last message-- putting each disc in a separate sub-directory-- and then moving them over one at a time while waiting for PLEX to process each disc and display-- has been 100% successful. It is a bit tedious; however it is a solution for me for the time being.

I’ve just now noticed that this topic has expanded from multiple discs for an album to difficulties with compilations. Perhaps I am overly tired but I am confused as to the topic now.

THAT BEING SAID, I have been experimenting with compilations and after finally discovering the impact of “album artist” (wish I had searched the PLEX forums first), I began to experiment further. It was and
still is my intent to use other album artists names such as: Time Life; Billboard; Classical; my own compilations created with a great old program called MusicIP Mixer (MusicIP). Mostly, I have been successful in doing this. There are times tho, when my album artist is changed back to Various Artists. It is annoying as hell! How I wish I could disable the agents for my music library-- PLEX keep your paws off my meta tags!

You can absolutely do so.

There are times tho, when my album artist is changed back to Various Artists.

Please follow the procedure @beckfield linked to above, how to configure the library and the order of the agents.
If you then follow the recommendations by setting AlbumArtist and AlbumTitle to absolutely identical values for each album, you should succeed.
I have done this many times - and I have a lot of multi-disc albums and samplers.

My music library is additionally accessed by the best PC Media player I have found after trying many (I have no affinity for anything with an i in front of its name). When using Music Bee, I like the AlbumTitle(s) ordered by year. Upon reflection, I can see the need for using parens around the year. I would prefer to put (year) before rather than after. Do you see PLEX getting fussy about such?

Please accept my thanks for all the help you folks have provided! There is much to digest and even more to consider.

It won’t cause much hassle, provided your embedded metatags are in order.

Should you however get mis-matches, first thing to try is to fall back to the recommended file and folder names.

Could someone help me, please? I’m trying to organize TV Shows Soundtrack library, where tracks from episode X are shown as CD X tracks on a TV Show Y Soundtrack album.

I’ve put Local Media Assets on top, checked Prefer Embedded tags, tried both premium and basic libraries, did a plex dance on every tag change, created new libraries to reflect changes, but still no CD dividers - just a list of all album tracks, ordered by cds (1,2,3,1,2,3 etc).

What have I done wrong? Does folder structure and naming matter with embedded tags present and checked? Cause I surely don’t want to have folders named Disk 1 instead of the episode name and number.

Right now in tags I have an album “TV Show Name Season 1 Soundtrack” with Album Artist “TV Show Name” and every track has the disk data like 1/15, 5/15 etc.

The folder structure is:
\Soundtracks\TV Show Name - Unofficial Soundtrack (2014-2017)\Season 1\1x03 Episode Title\1. Track title.mp3

How can I make those albums group their tracks by CDs? I thought reading from tags has been fixed, but somehow doesn’t work for me.

And another thing: during the plex dance, after moving folders out of the library, neither scan files nor refresh metadata and not even empty trash removes any data from the music library. I can see that every track file is missing in Info, but every artist/album/track just stays no matter what until I delete it manually, while the music library folder being completely empty all the time. Is there something wrong?

The CD dividers will come when you use an updated web app - like for instance this one: http://plex.tv/web
