Multi-part movies only playing the first file

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737 (running on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS)
Player Version#: Multiple Windows 10 desktops running Chrome & 3 different fire sticks

Cheers!

I’ve tried putting the files into their own folder(s)

\Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - Part1.mp4
Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - Part2.mp4

As well as just having the files in my media folder – it just plays back the first file. I can click the pencil and its seeing both files there, but only shows a 1.5 hour runtime instead of 3+ hours.

I also tried this from my iphone, and its still only playing back file #1.

It appears Plex didn’t recognize that video as 1 movie with 2 parts but as 2 versions of the same movie…

You should check:

  1. do the mp4 files have any embedded metadata and have you prioritized Local Media Assets over the other metadata sources -> this could result in the embedded metadata being used to catalog the files instead of the file name (therefore ignoring the properly named - Part 1 / - Part 2 suffixes).
  2. if you renamed and moved the files around after they were initially added to Plex, Plex might still have them both matched as they were matched when you first added them -> this could be overcome by performing a Plex Dance on those videos:
    1. move the files outside the folder monitored by Plex
    2. scan library files
    3. empty trash
    4. clean bundles
    5. return the files to their proper folder
    6. scan library files again

The naming and folder structure you have listed above is correct and should work.

In case the mp4 files had embedded metadata, I used makemkv to rip the blu ray discs for ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ and deleted the mp4 files. With the original files gone, I turned on empty trash when running a scan library files and scanned library files, I then performed a clean bundles and added the ‘new’ mkv files to my movies folder – interestingly, the counter starts out showing the runtime of both files, then changes to only the first file, then changes to the second file when it changes over files.

Either way, I’m not exactly sure which part fixed this, so I’m going to experiment some more – thank you for your help.
