Multi-Version Support Broken

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: 1.25.0.1511-47afccd4

If following the instructions at this link, multi-version support is broken. I have a HD and an UHD version of the movie, but when no matter what I name the files, it still puts them as separate movies, rather than different versions of the same movie.

  1. “Refresh Metadata” of the existing version of the movie
  2. determine the content of the guid="... property, from the Plex XML info of the existing movie version. What does it say?
  3. Take a look into the properties of your movie library.
On the ‘Advanced’ tab, what does it currently say in ‘Scanner’ and ‘Agent’?

Looks like I was using some “legacy agent” and when I upgraded the agent, it fixed that issue. Thanks

Don’t forget to Refresh Metadata. The update to the new agent won’t be complete without this.

So there are a couple issues I am running into with this “Multi-Version” availability with the new agent.

  1. I have different versions of the same movie “LOTR vs LOTR Extended” for example. Even though I have them named different, and in different folders, it still wants to combine them into the same movie. I have manually split them apart, only for them to be combined again later. I’ve manually changed the movie information so they are distinct, and yet, they will still be combined again later with everything reset, or they are combined, and showing up in two different collections, or the extended is showing up as it’s own movie, yet as another version of the original movie.

  2. Related to the first issue is that when I do have them split apart, and say I start playing the extended, then pause it or stop it to come back to it later. In the “continue watching” section, it will literally show the extended version, as well as the original version as an option to “continue watching,” with the time-stamps all the same. If I mark one as “unplayed” they will both disappear.

  1. Plex doesn’t support “versions” in the sense that you can have e.g. a “theatrical” and a “director’s cut” of the same title in your library. For Plex, they are essentially still the same movie.
  2. comes as a result of 1). Both files share the same identity, so they also share their playback progress/status.

Even if I have them titled completely different, and store them in completely different folders?" For example, I could name the theatrical the full name. “Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring” and simply name the extended version “Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition” What does plex look at that makes it see them as the same movie, even when I name the files, and folders, and metadata with completely different information?"

How does it not distinguish between those types of version, and yet distinguish between say the 1960s version of Magnificent Seven, and the remake of just a few years ago, even though they are titled the same. As a matter of fact, the only difference in their folders is the year for them.

They are still the same movie. You won’t find separate records at metadata sources like TheMovieDB or IMDb for the director’s cut.

And what about fan edits? I have a couple different edits for Star Wars, and I know at least one of those edits does show up as a separate movie in The Movie Database, yet still getting combined.
