Multiple epg sources, for those with multiple tuners

Do you mean Support Articles when you write “PS”? If so, I’ll pass on your suggestion. Otherwise, can you please clarify? Thanks.

Seems that we really need a ‘layered’ approach to this. So in DVR setup, we would start by adding one or more Guides/EPGs and for each Guide, we then allocate one or more tuners. So multiple tuners of the same type (like HDHomeRun FreeView here in the UK) could all be allocated to the same Guide. Then add another Guide for e.g. FreeSat and then add one or more FreeSat tuners to that Guide.

This would seem to solve the multiple tuners and Guides issue. It would mean having to select a specific Guide in order to watch or record, but that cannot be helped since the channel layouts are different on FreeView and FreeSat. In any case, that is EXACTLY what you have to do with any device that provides both. My Panasonic TV is FreeView and FreeSat and you have to select which to watch and hence which guide you use.

This does seem to me to be of paramount importance to Plex as not everyone can perfectly receive all channels from either service, so to be able to set up both and be able to then choose the best to watch is crucial. Also, not all channels are on both, so to ensure reception of all the channels, multiple setups are required in Plex.

Can this really be so hard?

By PS I mean PLEX Server software.

To understand the potential frustration regarding documentation for dual concurrent OTA & Cable channels in a blended channel line up, just try to find ANYTHING on it.

So, it is a feature request and it is a clear documentation request.

Thanks for the follow up!

Found a work around for this, or at least it worked for me…

Delete all your tuners from Plex, then open a session for each tuner you want to add, and in each session start adding your tuners - one per session (or if you want multiple tuners grouped together one of the sessions), and move to the next session until all your tuners are added. Once you have done that, you will get a LIVE TV& DVR session for each of your sessions. Not idea, but at least that way you have access to all your tuners without using XMLTV. Just wish that I could actually rename LIVE TV& DVR to something else.

How do you open more than one session?

Just open more than one browser or tab in your browser to your Plex server. Once you remove all your tuners, each browser session will be the wizard (and once the wizard starts it becomes independent of the other tabs), and using the wizard add each of your tuners (or set of tuners) to get independent EPGs in each of your browsers. I did that to get my two, each with their own EPG.

A million times yes to this feature.

OTA + IPTV user here!

This is so frustrating to not be able to assign specific EPG source to specific tuner.

This worked, thanks! Anyway to rename the menu item names? As I now have 2 Live TV and DVR options.

Glad that it worked, you validated that this works since I was the only one that seemed to get it working doing it this way.

No, unfortunately can’t rename the menu names - wish that would be possible, then they would have really an easy way to implement this. But it is better to have two separate tuner locations than trying to intermix them using the XMLTV like I was.

Weidnerj’s tip worked for me too! Thanks

Now if we could just rename the libraries.

@weidnerj Do all your shows appear in one guide?

No, as two guides, one for each tuner (or sets of tuners). So I have two tuners active now, so I have two guides. See attachment. Note: Can’t rename from Live TV & DVR, which is the name of each of the tuners.

I saw the same after configuring this on my own after asking the question above. This is a SUPERB plex hack. TY!! I have 3 now for 3 different countries I stream from. But since I’m never watching live, this works fine: all the recorded content appears in TV SHOWS anyway. It’s awesome!!!

I have come to understand that the two different markets that I am pulling from are going to be listed individually. When I did the XMLTV, having all the stations in one EPG was confusing and almost easier to have two more more for ease of use instead of 100 of channels in one listing.

Now we need to request that we can change the name of the Live TV & DVR.

Have u had any trouble with one DVR not being able to save to the TV Shows folder?

Check your permissions on your folder(s). Believe that I ran into that problem before I even did this and the issue was permission related.

How did you get 3 tuners with 3 epg? I can only get it to do 2 when I add the 3rd xteve tuner it overrides one of the original 2 tuners

I only have two, but will throw this out there. Did you remove all your current tuners, then open up 3 (or more) tabs or browsers at once using the URL for your PMS server before starting to add any tuner back? Once you have the three (or more) tabs open, then in each tab start adding your tuners. I only have two active now, so both work, but should be the same for more than 2 but the trick to make this work is to remove all the older tuners and add them back all at once using different tabs because each tab is a session and the only want to add multiple sessions is to do them in separate tabs.

I open multiple tabs but when I setup the 2nd DVR I get ‘The device is in use with an existing DVR’. Any Suggestions?
