I’m a happy user of PMS on Linux and use it for all my music and movies in the house to PC, Roku, tablets, phones, and PS3. I’d like to create another instance on a small car computer to allow my kids to watch movies via tablets on car trips and so forth. Networking and other issues aside, is this permitted with PlexPass (multiple media servers) and will it work if I’m not tethered to a mobile service (i.e. running standalone with only the wireless in the car, not an internet uplink.
No, it will not work. PlexServer needs to be connected to Plex servers the whole time. So if the servers from plex have problems you are not able to use your own server at home.
Is is possible to operate PMS in a standalone (no reachability to plex servers) once all the metadata and so forth have been fetched even if I’m not logged in?
It should work within a local network to stream media to local devices/apps so long as you are not using functionality that relies on plex.tv such as user switching for Plex Home - for example or using Secure Connections which rely on getting the plex.direct url from plex.tv andn doing DNS look up to translate the url
The plex apps and the server do cache information and there have been bugs where the cached info is lost. But safest option is not use secure connections and not have managed users and Plex Home or authenticated subnets/IP Addresses in the List of Networks that are allowed without Auth
