Multiple Version and Audio Transcode Issue on Android

Identified release when problem started, and no fix until 2025?

@DaveBinM Any updates?

I don’t have anything further which I can share at this time

I have the same issue, and it also triggers if any transcode is needed, so apparently as soon as the file doesn’t direct play.

And this also breaks the version feature, when limiting bitrate, because Plex won’t simply play the 1080p file, but will get stuck while trying transcode the 4K file.

yep i’m having this too, (copying some shows from my dvr scratch disk to also be on my backup array, made them unplayable on android tv’s that previous played fine but still working on other players) - where is the ‘play this version’ on the android tv app? i looked but couldn’t find it - is it buried under a long press?

Shouldn’t fixing these kinds of bugs be a priority? 4 months :face_with_peeking_eye:

Instead of adding features, you could at least fix the problems that have been reported… It’s amazing that a problem like this still exists 4 months after it was reported!

Not to make an excuse for the Plex Dev team, but I think it’s important to remember that Plex likely has telemetry on how many users this issue affects and has factored that into their dev schedule.

I’m guessing we haven’t seen a fix for this yet because the vast majority of users likely have a single version of movies and those of us who keep Optimized Versions are likely in the minority.

I could be wrong though, and maybe it’s just because a lot of the Plex team uses Shield TV Pro devices that can passthrough all audio, so they’re just not personally affected.

Regardless, I’d just bear in mind that there’s likely a reason for this significant delay in a fix. I’d love if the Plex team could chime in though (even though I understand policy prohibits sharing an ETA).

I appreciate this may not be high on the devs today list (especially given the “Play Version” workaround), but as a quick win, at least they could do is simply switch the button action from Play to Play Version when it detects there are multiple versions of a file - or move it from the more menu to the main UI. This would at least save several (remote) key presses for us who do like to keep different versions of the same movie to reduce the need for transcoding.

I’d like to add my voice to chorus of those would like to see this fixed ASAP. I’ve had to remove all multiple versions from my libraries, as my family was constantly being annoyed with “Why isn’t it playing!!!” … “Remember when Plex doesn’t play, you have go to the dots, and select Play Version…” Yeah super annoying.

Good god thanks for this. I came here to see if there was a fix for the not playing issue, but I’ve just realised this big is beyond getting annoyed with people playing 4k all the time and when I “shout” at them they say “but I choose the 1080p version!”

Plex please fix - I’ll happily forgoe all the “amazing” new features for a stable service.

deplorable

I think you should rethink the dynamics around updates and bugs. You do nothing more than add, add, add new features by introducing important bugs that you don’t fix later.

But not unknown bugs, but bugs identified by users and easy to fix, which you don’t like to fix (due to lack of interest).

I think you have to change the update policy (in the player section).
Rather mikrotik style.
1 beta channel, with new features, with a ticket system for users who want to test and report bugs via this ticket system
1 stable channel, with STABLE new features verified and that do not produce bugs.

You are taking advantage of the fact that plex is almost the only platform of the style to do what you want and with this system of ignoring users WHO PAY PLEX PASS in the end, as an alternative comes out, these same people that you have ignored are going to run away

@BigWheel

Plex player BUG: 9.14.0.37678
Plex player WITHOUT BUG: 9.13.1.37459

Keep calm, they are not going to fix it, you only have to see all the threads here, they only update app to introduce new features and don’t fix any bug, it doesn’t matter if bug it’s important or not

Fortunately, there are stable solutions like Infuse or PlexKodiConnect if you really want accuracy and stability.

With that said, I think a lot of us have family members who also use our Plex libraries and they’re only going to want to use something as simple as the Plex app… for all of them, this is a show-stopping bug that has them not using Plex at all right now. The usage of my Plex Server has fallen off a cliff in the last 6-months due to most of my family members not remembering to manually Select Version. As a result, they instead just say “Plex never works and is too hard to use!”

I’m sure Plex layoffs impacted development, but this is a truly critical issue to fix as it makes it so most people can’t even get a video to play (if they’re on Android, the audio needs to be transcoded, and if there are multiple versions)

Just because you have determined they are easy to fix does not mean they are. I’ll see if i can get it bumped up the priority list of bugs but I’m sorry I don’t have more info to share.

Working for me so far! I’ll got to check when I get home if it works on the shield. Thanks @BigWheel!

@BigWheel thank you for prioritizing this and getting it fixed!

Listed as resolved today:

@BigWheel is there any way to expedite getting this update? My CCwGTV and FTVS4KM are both stuck on 9.27 and I don’t see 9.28 in their respective app stores.

For Google devices if you should be able to go to https://play.google.com/store/search?q=plex&c=apps click the green Install on more devices and select your GTVwCC and it should push the update to it skipping the staged rollout.

Amazon takes their time with approvals unfortunately and we can’t speed that up. You can sideload the amazon apk from release notes but that will require enabling developer options and third party apps to send files to device .
