Music Library is Empty on Android

Server Version#: 1.21.4.4079
Player Version#: 8.13.2.23227

When I try to connect to plex from Android my music shows as empty. As do playlists. Movies appear, but if I try to play any of them I get an error saying it can’t access them. Furthermore, some settings seem stuck in the past, as if it can’t get any updates from the server.

These things all work perfectly from the web interface on a PC.

I tried accessing it from the web interface on my phone. At first it had the same problem. Then I switched it to “Desktop” mode and it started working. Even after switching back to mobile it continued working from the web interface on the phone.

But the app still doesn’t work.

To me it seems like nothing is updating and it can’t actually read anything from the server. But only on mobile.

I’m on the latest server but this issue has been ongoing for a long time. Several months, maybe a year.

I’ve tried signout/in, clearing the cache and storage for the app and uninstall/reinstall of the app.

I can get the server/android logs, but its not clear how to post them. I don’t see a way to attach a file and they are over the post limit.

I resolved this today and I thought I would comment on how for future generations.

tldr: I set the Plex client to accept insecure connections, but it didn’t work until I “jiggled” a some of other stuff.

I had tried setting my client to accept insecure connections previously, having read about a problem similar to mine on other forum posts. However, even after restarting the client it had no effect, and so I set it back to the default.

However, today I visited my server from the browser on my PC (which works) and I saw there was a new update. I had updated it just before posting this, but I took another update, just to see what happened.

After the update the web browser told me that it couldn’t connect and I had to allow insecure connections. I had never seen this before. I allowed it. After this, oddly, the web browser lost all its music, and claimed I was still on the previous version and had to update. Shrug? So I applied the update again. After the server reboot, the web browser connected again and worked. So, I went into my android app, allowed insecure connections, and… bam! This time it worked.

Maaaaybe it was the update (but I had only updated a week prior and I’ve had this issue for months). Personally I think it was something about allowing insecure connections, and THEN rebooting the server. But that’s just a guess. That’s why I included everything I did. I don’t really know what EXACTLY I did that fixed it. I just jiggled a bunch of stuff and then it started working. So if you’re experiencing this, maybe trying some of this stuff will help.

Good luck.

Turns out, the answer was something very dumb. This situation is very unlikely to happen for anyone else but I feel obliged to explain what happened.

I got excited too soon. The old symptoms returned the next day.

Since I wasn’t getting any response here I went through the logs myself. In doing so I noticed that the IP address it was connecting to was NOT the ip address of my server. I was like, “what now?” Then I remembered. About a year ago (right around the time this started) I got a new computer. To save me setup time I just cloned the hd of my existing computer to that one. Which meant I had (without intending it) a second plex server running on that second computer (which has no music on it). Sigh. :stuck_out_tongue: For whatever reason the web interface randomly always connected to server 1 (with music) and android always to server 2 (without).

So, uninstalling plex from machine 2 was, of course the answer.

So dumb! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah well.
