Maybe I have same issue. On Android, after update, occasionally music playback just stops and please either starts over or I have to relaunch.
This is getting annoying now. I am trying to listen to my favorite music (Jóhann Jóhannsson), and not even that works ( using direct play, so not related to this Transcoding is not working when playing music using mobile data or external Wi-Fi). I love the Plex ecosystem, but come on. Who do I have to blow for this to get dev resources put on it?
@sixones you still around mate?
Here’s another log plex-log-d2dyno.zip (879.9 KB)
@elan
Just now the app completely locked up while playing music. Update? @sixones @SamFromPlex
No logs are needed. We’re actively working on fixing music playback issues
@elan @sixones we are approaching 4 months since I originally started bugging you. Are dev resources more focused on podcasts right now? Is the audio engine being redone? or is this simply not being taken care of? Looking for an honest answer, because this has gone on for some time now.
It’s being actively worked on for music (as well as podcast), hopefully we can share some more details soon.
The original issue seemed to be caused by MediaPlayer, which is built into Android and modified by various manufacturers to have countless limitations, bugs and other fun things. We have been actively working at replacing this for audio, and making music in Plex on Android awesome once again!
Yeah I was thinking it was a MediaPlayer issue, since it varied device-to-device. What is the ETA though? If this has been acknowledged but not fixed, I am thinking there’s either one guy in the corner working on Android, or this is not a priority bug.
There’s no ETA on replacing the system media player with Plex’s own internal component. It’s “actively” being worked on. That’s all we have. Plex Android music player progress bar glitch
The issue is, this seems to be a problem on an ENTIRE Android version. This doesn’t seem device specific, it seems to be an issue with 8.x or later. That said, this is likely happening on thousands of devices (non-specific hardware), not just hundreds (specific use case).
This is why I’m bugging Plex. I thought I was being nitpicky, but then I came here to see 400+ replies to this issue, and NO FIX.
But no, VR is getting attention, Podcasts is getting attention, new UI that every user on Reddit hates (I like it, but it needs work). Am I missing something else that Plex did that no one asked for (granted, Podcasts was actually requested)? I do not understand the utter disregard for fixing issues on Android.
It is like Plex has 2 teams of developers: 1 team that actually can fix problems (see: Plex for Kodi, PMS), and 1 that can only create problems (see: iOS, Android, Plex for Windows Store). Really, @elan (if I understand the CTO role correctly) needs to get the entire dev team whipped into shape, and create a balance of working on new features (which everyone wants), and fixing major bugs, followed by minor bugs( because right now only minor, 1 user reported bugs are being fixed. Not feature breaking bugs like this one).
This is one of the reasons a public bug tracker would be perfect. Plex would be held accountable for major issues, and receive real help and reports, while also prioritizing them properly. And the community could see if something is really being ignored.
Hell, if the Plex for Android source code were available, I’d hire a developer to fix this issue. This is how frustrating it is for me.
/Endrant
I agree with a lot of that, especially that Plex needs a proper public issue tracker (forums aren’t enough).
But I also agree that, if they’re already working on replacing the system media player for audio, it wouldn’t make sense to spend limited developer time on bugs in the current implementation if it’s going to be replaced soon.
I’m frustrated too. I can’t play my music on my phone because of the other thread I linked. And while it’s not a perfect analogue to this issue (device-specific bug vs. OS version–specific bug), the developer-time constraint still applies. (I’ll join in the thread-bumping if it takes long enough, though.)
@Daimyo ~ please trust me, we’re actively working on upgrading the audio player on Android, and you won’t be disappointed with the result. It’s a largish change which has been in progress for a few months, and it won’t be too much longer before you can try it out.
I updated my OnePlus 6 to Android 9 today, and I was so happy that Plex was working properly! I was able to play about 7 songs perfectly. You can imagine my disappointment when I plug my headphones into my phone, Plex crashes, and restarts. Now it’s back to the same exact behavior as already reported. Why would it do this?
Im going to add my 2 cents and report im having the same issue on Huawei p20 Pro.
I posted in reddit regarding the matter and they have also confirmed its a long ongoing issue and suggested that getting a 3rd party app will sort it. Bearing in mind, I have to pay £3.75 to use this app with my server! That isnt a solution to this case, having to pay someone else to be able to use my plex server which I also pay monthly for.
Is there an ETA for the new fix or new Audio platform?
@elan @antoniolg @jesusmc @sixones @romancamelia
It’s been 5 months since I’ve reported this issue, and much, much longer since others reported it.
What’s the real story behind this? Not only am I impatient with this issue, I am frustrated now. Does Plex need to hire a new Android developer? I can personally recommend some. Does Plex need a letter to the CEO from the community, telling them to stop all the unrequested features? I am sure we can make that happen through Reddit.
The lack of A: active Plex for Android developers in this thread and B: lack of music updates to the Plex for Android app signify to me that this is either not being worked on, or the team is simply ignoring.
At this point, Plex should have just taken a few days to create a workaround, rather than citing ‘revamp of audio engine is coming, but is taking time to do it right’. I am pretty sure a few days would have been the same amount of ‘dev time’ that has been assigned to this new audio engine anyways
It is what I’ve said previously. There was no “few days” fix for the issues, and any time spent would have been throwing good time after bad.
The team is focused on getting the new player out. We’re actively testing it as we speak, so it’s been integrated and it’s working quite well. QA is doing testing it, we’re resolving the last issues, not too much longer now. And it’ll be worth the wait, promise.
I can never stay mad for some reason when you reply like that
Well I look forward to seeing it integrated very soon then.
This is great news, and not only because of this issue. It will likely solve my main issue with playing music in Plex, as well. Someone else on the team has the same phone I do (Razer Phone 1st gen), so hopefully they’re involved in the QA process. <thread hijack over>
Hello,
I have the same issue as the original poster explained, that means: playback stops after ~6 songs for no visible reasons. Play / Pause does not do anything visible, only forward button starts the next song. This action takes several seconds. I’ve experienced this issue now more than 10 times while streaming.
I did not have this behavior roughly 2 months ago.
