Music Playback Stopping

Just like to take some time to thank the devs for sorting this issue out! After I installed the beta app my music playback improved drastically! No more random stopping.

When I originally commented I had my Plex Pass lifetime subscription refunded. After seeing you guys address the issue and release the beta I re-purchased the lifetime subscription.

So yeah, thanks!

Hello, I wanted to also see if this has been solved because I just created a premium music library and I can stream it fine with the screen on but as soon as it cuts off my music stops also at random. my app and server are updated. plex on my Samsung Note 8 shows 12/17/18 update, ver 7.9.0.8439. I do not see any versions in the play store under Early Access and it is listed under power saver as an unmonitored app.
edit: I notice that while my ph. is charging on my wireless charger the screen cuts off and my music seems to continue to play without issue

I believe playback pausing has now been resolved in a beta version. It was just released.

Been testing it this afternoon and my problems seems to have gone…for now

Thought I’d share if it helps someone with the same issue.

After my Galaxy S8 updated to Android version PIE my plex audio has been experiencing problems where it stops and starts playing randomly after the screen auto locks and the phone is not charging. I’m on Plex Android version 7.13.

This is more of a workaround but I’ve been playing audio files for the past couple days now with no issues.

From your phone go to Settings > Apps > tap the 3 dots on the top right of the window > Special Access > Optimize battery usage > click the Apps not optimized dropdown > All > scroll down to Plex and turn it off.

When on battery power and the phone screen turns off/locks, the phone battery/app optimization kicks in and it appears that the Plex Android app is not able to deal with the way the Android PIE OS handles it.

Disabling battery optimizations for Plex player does not work for me on my brand new Samsung Galaxy S10e. Playback still stutters and stops when the phone’s screen is locked. I am on version 7.13.0 as well. It does seem battery charge dependent though and definitely gets worse on my evening commute, when my phone’s battery is usually at around 70% charge. It only stutters once or twice occasionally in the morning when the phone is fresh from the charger. Needless to say, Plex is the only Android media player having this problem. I have installed and used regularly on my phone: Pandora, Spotify, Qobuz, BubbleUPnP, and Hi-Fi Cast players but none of them ever had stopped playback when phone is put to lock state. Not a single time. Please, Plex developers - get yourself together after all! This should be embarrassing but seems no one at Plex.tv cares…

I have the same problem…! The audio player gets worse after each update…
Why do we need all the new ā€œfunctionsā€ when the most important one, playing music, is no longer working?!
I have a Huawei P20 lite with battery optimization disabled.

Does anyone have a solution now?

I too am, and have for awhile now, having trouble with Plex crashing when the screen times out or when i need it in the background while running another app, such as navigation. This problem existed on both my old Galaxy S7 and my brand new Galaxy S10+ which had a fresh install of the plex client app. And i would say it’s gotten much worse over the past few months. It used to be occasional and random. It’s pretty much a given that it’s going to happen now.
I checked the permissions and gave plex full storage access and this did make it play longer before crashing, but eventually it does the same thing.
It’s not (shouldn’t be) a network issue because i’m playing locally synced music and have ā€œoffline browsingā€ enabled. I haven’t tested it with network streaming. I’m also confused about plex not having storage permissions already since it was downloading and storing the files on myt SD card via the sync feature. My solution on the motorcycle is to set the screen to it’s maximum 10 minute time out, and then either plug in to the usb power socket, or set the screen to be so dim that i can barely see it, you know, to save battery. Then wake it up instantly when the music stutters.
It may be a more broad android issue since i’ve noticed similar behavior on my Sony Android TV. It’s streaming directly from the server on the same local network. It will ā€œripā€ and stutter then crash about an hour after the tv screen saver comes on. If i catch it fast enough and wake up the screen it fixes, Just like my phone. If i don’t catch it in time i have to actually ā€œrebootā€ the tv. Not just turn it off and on. Since this has been a sporadic and random issue for about a year now, i’m getting the feeling that the Music player is the red headed step child at Plex. But it’s really why i have Plex. I rarely utilize the video features. It feels like they’ve fallen into the Autodesk frame of mind. Keeping adding features that look good on marketing materials while ignoring basic reliability and functionality issues. I mean seriously, i still can’t stream the same song or playlist across multiple devices at the same time.

Thanks rjborzea. May be It fixed for me on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ One UI connected to LG sound bar with BT. Yet to test with longer playlist. Before turning off the ā€œoptimize battery usageā€ playing the song used to get choppy as if buffering…withing 30 sec. of screen lock and eventually stop …very annoying. I’ll test with my office bluetooth headphones and report back.

The new music player has been available to all users for quite a few months now. Are you on the latest version?

I’ve noticed that with a VPN and proxy, plex drops my connection and music stops trying to download (it’s in my logs), I dont have this problem with YouTube or any other services behind pfsense, VPN, proxy, etc. the music starts out fine behind all of this on my PC but when I’m behind all that routing, the song initially plays and downloads as much as possible then streams but once it gets are far as plex has set us to be able to download before we have to catch up to what we are streaming, it just stops trying to download the rest of the song to stream.

I am having issues with Plex pausing music playback when another app takes audio focus and not resuming after focus is released, this has been an issue for me for the last few stable releases. I’ve tried reinstalling and resetting defaults with no luck.

When playing a whole synced album on the current ios of iphone, music randomly stops after a few tracks while on offline browsing, as if some tracks were not fully synced when in fact it said sync is completed. I would hve to restart the plex app before i can play the next track. This is frustrating.

This is so frustrating. I have even put it on offline browsing see if that helps with downloaded music. And still stops playing. Also won’t repeat songs when you put them on repeat one. Please fix asap!!!

Looks like they are not making serious effort to develop the music part of the app. Maybe because of their partnership with Tidal… you will be forced to subscribe to have decent music listening experience. Thing is, I have a music collection that I have curated myself. I don’t care for streaming platforms. The developers should think about people like me as well, though that’s debatable as profits come first right?

They made several huge improvements to the music functionality of Plex for Android in recent months. Just implementing a custom audio player alone was a big undertaking, let alone the investments in crossfade support, visualizers, volume leveling…

Are there bugs? Sure. That doesn’t mean Plex doesn’t care about music.

I haven’t personally run across this particular bug in a while, but it might just be my luck or hardware platform. If this only happens on certain devices, it’ll be that much harder for the devs to track down and fix.

Had the same troubles on the Sony Experia XZ phone.

Any update on this? It’s a pretty fundamental function of Plex.

I’m seeing these issues too on my Samsung S8. Whenever the screen is off (not necessarily locked, could be the flip cover is closed) Plex is at risk of stopping to play. Just opening the cover starts it playing again, most (but not all) of the time. My music is sync’d, Plex is running in offline mode and audio is playing on bluetooth earbuds.

Having the same issue here. Using Sennheiser Momentum earbuds on a Samsung S10+. Both server and app are latest version (Updated to 1.18.0.1944 Server 2 days ago). Running version 7.22.1.12828 on Android. There was a Security Update for Android today as well (15.10.2019) Which after installing caused this issue to appear. At least to my knowledge. It was working fine before that.

I too am having this issue - a Samsung Galaxy S10+ with the latest version of PMS, client and the Android October security update. With Bluetooth headphones, and in the car, the sounds suddenly stops, the Plex app shows the track still playing. If I skip to the next track (without opening the phone) it starts playing again.
This happens when streaming the tracks, or downloaded. If I play a FLAC file on the phone, it even does it with the screen open on the Plex app and it appears that the position in the track jumps back 1-2 seconds!

For a product that I am perpetually paying for, this does seem a very poor show that these issues have persisted for over 3 years!

I am currently listening to Spotify using the same setup and have no issues.

Plex Team, PLEASE LOOK TO RESOLVE THESE ISSUES!
