Naming TV Shows

Hello.

Yes, I realize that what I’m about to ask has been asked before. I’ve found similar threads on this forum, and, even when I perform a random Google or Bing search, I’ve found topics on this (links to articles or message forums).

It has to do with the proper naming scheme for TV shows.

Yes, there’s this link on this very site:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

But it’s still not working.

As a matter of fact, when performing a random Google or Bing search, I came across the very same issue that I’m having with a strange name that comes up for a show: “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”. This has happened to me twice now: with “The Good Wife” TV series, and with “The Walking Dead” TV series.

I’ll follow the proper naming scheme, but when I launch Plex Media Server, that “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” name shows up. I’ll still be able to see things like “S03E05”, so, I still can pick out which episode to click on.

So, as an example, my naming scheme is thus:
C:\Users[My Name]\Videos\TV Shows\The Walking Dead\Season 10\The Walking Dead - s10e01

However, in the Plex Media Server, and, when I launch the Plex app in my Roku Player, it has that “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”.

This has also happened with “The Good Fight” TV series.

What am I missing? Is there one teeny-tiny step I’m missing?
Thanks for any helpful info;
Pez

are we talking about mp4/m4v files – and if so… do they maybe have an embedded title?
in combination with local media assets being enabled and prioritized in your server’s agent settings (Settings > Server > Agents > TV Shows > ...), Plex will use the embedded title to match the show which can cause some crude results…

Edit: if that embedded title has some weird prefix, that would also explain why multiple shows are mismatched as that other show

Make sure your TV library is pointed to “TV Shows” and not “Videos.” That would cause some problems.

Hi; thanks for the replies.

tom80H: No, they’re not MP4 or M4V files; they’re MKV.

And you mentioned “embedded title”: If it is as you’re describing, and it has an “embedded” title, is there a way to Edit it? Some simple program that would allow me to change/ edit this embedded title?

And, you show a path of: Settings > Server > Agents > TV Shows >. If I launch the Plex Server (which opens in my Google Chrome browser), and then in the top-right click on Settings, on the next screen…in the left-hand panel menu, I do not see Server. I do, however, see Agents.

After clicking on Agents, I do not see TV Shows, but rather, I see “Shows”.

So, how about a little more clarification on “embedded title” and if I can Edit it; and the path you showed of Settings > Server > Agents > TV Shows: Why can’t I see it?

philipsw: You say to make sure my TV library is pointed to TV Shows" and not “Videos”.

Do you mean if I’m on the Home Page of my Plex Server, and then in the left-hand panel menu, click/ highlight “TV Shows”, then, click on those three dots for Action, go down to Manage Library, then click on Edit, and then on the General tab? There??

I hope I don’t appear too dense. I thought that after dropping these .MKV files in C:\Users[My Name]\Videos\TV Shows\The Walking Dead\Season 10, or, C:\Users[My Name]\Videos\TV Shows\The Good Fight\Season 3, that it would just get scanned in the Plex Server and the proper metadata would get collected to display the proper image for the thumbnails…and not this Aqua Teen stuff!!! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Hi - I’m referring to this screen, when you edit your library:

You should have this (and probably only this) in your folders list currently:
C:\Users[Your Name]\Videos\TV Shows

If it’s not set that way currently, change it. If you do have to change it and it still doesn’t fix things, you may need to perform the “Plex Dance” on the library:

philipsw: Yes!!! That did the trick!!

I navigated my way to where you showed in that screenshot to Edit the Library/ the Add Folders tab.

Yes, it turns out I must have had too many entries in there. Like you suggested, I now have in there only this:
C:\Users[Your Name]\Videos\TV Shows

After that, I did a Re-scan of the Library, and then it repopulated with the proper icons for the TV shows I have in there; no more “Aqua Teen”!! Guess I don’t have to do the “Plex Dance”

Thanks much!

No problem, glad it worked.

how do you do that ? point to correct folder ?

This is done in the library configuration. Hover your mouse over the library in the side panel, click the three vertical dots, then manage and edit. The Add Folder tab of the dialog which opens is where you set the path to your media. More detailed information can be found here:
