"Nearby" detection does not work in Samsung Plex app

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#: 5.91.0
App Name: Plex for Samsung
Platform Version: 6

At least for me, the “Nearby” detection is not working with the the default settings of the Smart TV app. The app insists on connecting remotely, even though the TV is in the same LAN segment as the Plex server. “Nearby” detection does work with the Plex Web App from a PC (a Mac) connected to the same LAN segment.

It is my understanding that connecting to the Plex server directly in the same LAN is possible only in an insecure manner, which probably means: no encryption. Which led me, after some experimentation, to the finding that I have to change the Smart TV app setting “Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections” from the default “On same network as server” to “Always”.

Later on I found that this quirk and its workaroud have been mentioned already in https://forums.plex.tv/t/lg-plex-app-same-network-but-tries-to-transcode-compatible-file-cpu-not-powerfull-enough/845751/32, at the end of that thread. However, in said thread it happened in the LG Plex app. So this seems to be a multi-platform issue, and it is still not fixed.

What makes this especially unfortunate is the fact that it is broken with the default settings, and I have a suspicion that many users perhaps do not even notice. at least in the beginning, that the app does not connect directly in the LAN, contrary to expectations and what the settings claim.

My TV is connected to the network by wire (Ethernet). Maybe this is a contributing factor, because I believe most other Smart TV users connect wirelessly, by WiFi. Perhaps it is as simple as the app querying the IP network information for the wrong network interface. But that is just speculation. In any case, I believe this should be fixed now. The posting I mentioned above is from July 2023!
