Need help with where to put .srt files for shows and movies

I have a Roku 2 with Plex on it that our family really enjoys because we have no cable where we live, but we were having problems with TV shows and movies that have languages other than English and are not hard coded with English subtitles, but come with English .srt files for the parts that are not in English.

We have a movie folder where we put all the movies, a TV folder that has sub-folders inside of it for each show, but I can't get the .srt files to work no matter what I do. I don't know where I am supposed to be putting the .srt files. I DO know that just putting the .srt file for one particular movie into a folder with 1000 other movies in it doesn't work and I hate to think that I have to put each movie that needs and .srt file in a totally separate folder within the main folder for movies, so if someone could help me with this I would SO appreciate it. I'm not good with coding and all that but everyone in the house is getting aggravated at watching shows that are primarily English, but have some parts with other languages and they have no idea what is being said because there are no subtitles.

Thanks in advance for any help.  :)

The secret is in the file name.

Movies

TV Shows

But they are separated from each other. Look at my screenshot.

Sorry, I don't understand what you are getting at. The screenshot does not give me any clues.

The external subtitle file needs to be named exactly like the main video file, with only the filename extension different.

So if you have

Moviename (2015).mp4

then the external SRT subtitle has to be named

Moviename (2015).srt

to get associated with the movie.

Perfectionists can include a language code before the filename extension to indicate the language of the subtitle

Moviename (2015).eng.srt

Okay, I get that the .srt has to be named the same as the movie or TV show name, but do I have to put each movie and episode of a TV show in a sub folder within the movie and TV shows folders??? Cuz seriously that would take forever. And I already tried putting a .srt file that came with a movie in the main movie folder along with the movie I got, but when I played it on the TV it didn't show any subtitles or options to use subtitles for the non-English parts. THAT is whee I get confused. The screenshot was only to show you how my library is set up with a section for movies/TV Shows/Nighttime Movies/ Family Videos and such. ;)

Well, try it out without the separate subfolder.

I'm pretty sure it'll work.

The documentation I linked to, shows both varieties. With subfolder and plain.
