New Files Not Appearing After Library Scan

Server Version#: 1.32.1.6999
Player Version#: 1.32.1.6999

I added some movies yesterday and they are not showing up in my library. When I do a library scan, it spins the wheel for about 5 seconds and then stops, but the new stuff doesn’t show up anywhere. Some salient points:

  • I haven’t been doing anything new or unusual. I’ve been adding files at basically the same rate for a couple of weeks now and it’s always worked as it’s supposed to (add movies, run library scan, new movies show up in library). It only just yesterday stopped working.

  • I’m running the latest version of the Plex Media Server.

  • I’ve quit and restarted the PMS, restarted my laptops, and restarted the Mac Mini I use as the media server.

  • The files are definitely on the Mac Mini, in the same location as all my other movie files.

  • I’ve run scans of the entire Plex library (movies, music, and TV), and everything updates properly except the new content.

  • There aren’t any alerts or warnings.

  • The most common cause of this, as the Plex forums note and FAQ note, is naming issues, but I always name my files in the same way: “nameofmovie.extension” (so, for instance, “deathrace2000.mkv”). I never put in spaces, special characters, or anything else. And I change the filenames before I ever load them onto the hard drive, so this can’t be the issue.

  • I’ve tried doing the automatic library scan update, the manual update you can do from the Plex player for the movie library, and the manual refresh from the system tray icon, all with the same result.

  • I don’t see any Disk Image Format content, excluded content, or archived/zipped content. It’s all just standard media files. The permissions on the Mini let me read and write.

  • Automatic library scans can cause it to hang up, so I disabled them and am only doing manual scans now; that shouldn’t be a problem. (Also, it’s not hanging up – just the opposite, it’s scanning super-quickly and not finding the new files.)

  • I tried re-loading the files into the folder and over-writing the ones that were on there. Same result. I also tried deleting one of the new files and then putting it on the server again, same result.

  • I signed out of Plex from the PMS and from the player and signed back in again. No change.

This has me stymied. I’ve tried a ton of things, as you can see, and I can’t figure it out. If you have any ideas, let me know! Thanks so much.

This is your issue
Death Race (2008)

or

Death Race (2008) {imdb-tt0452608}

I understand that this is a problem, but I don’t think it’s the problem I’m having. I have over 1,200 movie files, and I name them all the same way, and they always showed up with a Library Scan until yesterday. Plex sometimes shows the wrong data based on the filename, but I fix it manually, and it never fails to show up in the library, which is the problem I’m having.

It may not be your problem. Unfortunately, the only way to verify if you have some other issue is to name the movies correctly

If they still fail afterwards, then you need to invest troubleshooting steps somewhere else.

When you use a naming format like this it may work for a long time. What’s may be happening is those items are showing up as duplicates to some other movie already in your library

You can check that by filtering the library for duplicates here
Screenshot (671)
If you see any posters there you can click the 3 dots and “get info”. You will see the file names that are being combined

As you add more media, now you have more and more movies that could accidently be mistaken as a duplicate. Eventually you reach a point where that process becomes a certainty

Rename a few of the movies you’re having trouble with and Plex Dance them to see if they show up

Good looking out, but alas, I already tried this – there are no duplicates at all. I’ve named movies with the same name with dates to prevent this.

To be clear – I think I may have not made this apparent in my original post – I have never had this problem with any files before yesterday, and now I am having it with every file. None of the files I’ve added have duplicate or even similar filenames, but they’re all failing to show up in the player after that point. Nothing new I have, regardless of filename, has shown up, and this is about 60 files. So while I recognize that naming can be an issue, I don’t think that’s what happening in my case.

I would try to take a movie out that is already currently matched and showing up ok

Plex dance it and add it back to see if it shows up again

I tried Death Race the way you have it named and it does show up, just as the wrong movie

Death Race 2000 (1976)

I didn’t realize you added 60 movies that aren’t scanning into Plex at all so, I see what you’re saying

I don’t know anything about mac but is it possible somehow your drive permissions changed somehow?

I already checked the permissions for the drive and they’re all as they should be, so that’s not it either.

Also LOL I was talking about Death Race 2000, I picked the least clear example, my bad

I did delete an existing file, re-added it, and re-ran the library scan, and it still didn’t show up, so I don’t think that’s it, but I haven’t done the Plex Dance yet, so I’ll make that my next step – thanks!

Tried again with a file, this time using the Plex Dance, and it still doesn’t show up. Not really sure what to try next!

Have you tried to add any tv shows? You may have to gather logs for this

Enable Debug, not verbose. Try to add a movie and scan it manually. After it fails, wait 1 minute and then download your logs from the troubleshooting section

There are some problems with Windows not scanning new files but I discounted that because you’re on mac

The only solution for them at the moment is to roll back to the last working version they were on

The only other thing I can tell you to try is to create a test library and add a few of those items. If they show up you might be looking at some kind of corruption for that library

I can check for database corruption but to diagnose a scanner is issue I’ll have to ping an employee to look further into your logs

I did one TV show with the same result. I’m going to try a test library and see what happens with that – if nothing comes of it, I’ll have to start logging. Thanks again, I’ll check back!

I’m also facing the same issue - tried everything, but it still wont add… Only way to get it back on track is to change the scanner to TVDB rather than the plex tv series scanner.

I’m having the exact same issue since yesterday. I have 10 movies I added that are not being picked up despite being exactly named as they should be. Had a couple that worked though. I was losing my mind until I saw this post.

Suspect something was broken in the new release?

I have a similar issue, I have 2 movies the same name, BUT, one is animated, one is live action. Ghost in the shell, one stars Scarlett Johansson, the other is anime. It will ONLY show the live action one. Is there a way to MANUALLY add a movie to Plex?

That sounds like a different issue. The others can’t get any files to show up at all

When you have two movies with the same name they often can get scanned as duplicates.

One shows up but the other one appears to go missing. It’s not actually missing, it’s just combined with the other one and you can’t see it

The easiest way to solve that is to Plex dance the both movies and add the imdb id number to both

Ghost in the Shell (2017) {imdb-tt1219827}.mp4

Ghost in the Shell (1995) {imdb-tt0113568}.mp4

Changing the filename of the animated one, did the trick. Did you make up that filename by adding the IMDB information??

If you look a movie on imdb that number is in the address bar at the top if you need to add it to anything

I use a program called TinyMediaManager that inputs all of those numbers automatically as I add new movies

This version is free if you want to try it

Movie format
Folder format: ${title} (${year})
File format ${title} (${year}) {imdb-${imdb}}

Thank you VERY much. This should make life with plex a bit easier!

As a matter of curiosity, what are the “Country or Region”, “Regional format” and “Language” settings of your Windows?

USA/English

Your scanning issue may be related to 1.32.1.6999 not adding new episodes/shows for TV - #101 by sa2000 - if so, the cause has been identified and an update with fix is in the works
