New installation on Windows 10 - stuck on "looking for servers..."

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488-cc260c476
Player Version#: 3.81.1

I recently helped my parents set up their first smart TV, so my next step was to get a Plex server running on their computer so they could access their content on the new television.

I created an account, downloaded the server, signed in / installed it, then signed in on the website - and it’s stuck on “looking for servers…”. I’ve done all manner of signing in and out of the website, shut the server down and reopened it, restarted the whole computer…nothing.

I’ve verified in Windows Defender that everything Plex-related is allowed through the firewall.

I’ve read the basic FAQs / troubleshooting on the plex page underneath where the no server error occurs, but nothing there seems to be helping.

When I set this up on my own computer, it was child’s play - so it’s pretty frustrating that I cannot for the life of me get this working now. Any advice? Thank you!

Are you perhaps using a different default web browser on your own machine (and not Edge)?

Either use a different web browser and load http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
or disable ‘secure connections’ (recommended only if your parents are never going to use remote access to their Plex server).
To do the latter, close the plex server with its tray icon,
then extract the .reg file from this zip archive secureconns_disable.zip (363 Bytes)
and double-click it.
Acknowledge the warning, then re-start plex server.

I tried using both Chrome and Firefox (fully updated), with no change.

What DID have an impact was going into the registry and deleting a few keys (of course, now I can’t find that original post, so I don’t recall which keys they were).

That at least got me signed in and seeing the server, but when I was given the option to claim the server, I clicked it - and was immediately given an error and the server went missing again. Went back, deleted the keys again, server came back…so for now, I’ve left the server unclaimed and it’s working.

That means there was already a Plex installation on this machine, using a different plex.tv account.
The procedure is this one: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
