New IOS Plex Apps – Time to Say Thank You!

I’ve been pretty vocal in the past with my frustration towards the Plex developers — and rightly so, given the overwhelming number of bugs in the previous version. From chaotic TCP connections to frequent crashes, offline downloads taking forever to show up, and dynamic playlists that endlessly grew without clearing… it was a rough ride.

But today, I have to say: the new suite of Plex apps is absolutely fantastic. A huge thank you to the entire team for this massive leap in quality!

The split into separate apps felt a bit confusing at first, but each one serves different moments and you quickly get used to it.

Plex
Smooth, responsive, and quick to load episodes. Playback is seamless, subtitles can be downloaded easily, and offline content now appears as expected.

Suggestions for improvement:

  • Let us pin our favorite libraries to the home screen?

PlexAmp
I’m rediscovering this gem! Ratings now work offline (yes!). Offline playlist downloads are handled correctly — items that no longer belong to the playlist are removed, and new ones are added.

Suggestions:

  • The rating stars are really small, especially while running. It’s tricky to tap them accurately — and my grandmother, who enjoys rating her music, struggles to see them. Maybe reduce album art size to free up space?
  • Offline downloads pause when the device sleeps — could that be improved?
  • Ability to pin favorite libraries to the home screen?

Plex Photos
Simple, clean, and efficient.

Suggestions:

  • The video player could use some love — currently, you can’t even scrub through a video.

Huge kudos once again to the entire team for this excellent work!

Thank you? Thank you for releasing apps across iOS/iPadOS, Android and Apple TV that are lacking core user features without any up-front discussion with customers. Sorry, this is not a thank you that I can get behind.

Initial onboarding of new app is a s*** show, every time I completed it over seven devices, and some of my family, it didn’t work, required several app restarts.

Live TV (Plex Pass feature) is unusable across iOS, iPadOS and AppleTV. It doesn’t work, and should not be considered anywhere near ready for go.

No DVR recording, honestly…….

Show > Series > Episode navigation is gone.

No skip intros, adverts or out-tros, WTF!

Can only download a single show at a time, no syncing and no auto delete, this is a major and significant regression for so many people.

App crashes and hangs constantly, just another situation where Plex appears to have no ability to test for iOS or iPadOS.

Many other items of features and core navigation as to be fixed in the roadmap.

This is nothing to be thankful about, Plex App on iOS/iPadOS and AppleTV was already unstable and feature poor, now it is more unstable and at least 40-50% behind in features.

This will be a masterclass at some point as to how not to migrate your code base, whist expecting new users from the 29th of April to pay more than double for a Plex Pass.

Just pathetic.

I am pretty serious and surprised to be honnest.

These are all my previous posts I was pretty negative

My hope is that things continue to work just fine for you, and you haven’t used any good will or karma to have this situation

I will concede, that when the app is working ok, things seem better. That overall design/UX are better. Just for me too many blockers. I also applaud you for providing positive feedback, normally folks complain here and enjoy what works in silence (sadly the way it should be).

I’m sure the devs are feeling the pressure of so many folks with issues, I’m sorry for that. That said, it was entirely the choice of Plex to move forward with New Experience launch to all customers, that takes away features and core experiences without notification or enough in app guidance.

PS - Are you seriously getting a good experience from Live TV / DVR? Even Plex in their notes admit that it is rather broken.

  • My initial onboardings of new apps were very easy ; really no problem
  • Live TV is working (experience is not perfect but it works)

You are right I didn’t see that :

  • DVR recording/use is not possible anymore in the app … that s missing
  • skipping intros, adverts or out-tros disappeared … but that minor for me ; I am sure it will come back
  • for syncing : you mean download all elements of a all show ? yeah that s missing

i don’t know what you mean with auto delete ?

  • For me apps really do not crash as the previous one was … it was a nightmare for me … this one is a MAJOR amelioration for me !!! really new life !!
As i said I can browse online and offline content very smoothly … I love =) and yes I hope it s not only karma ^^

I was really insulting developers before … and before doing the app update I was like “No I don’t want to discover what s going to appen” because I was not confident AT ALL
But yes I want to share this good feedback because for me missing functionnalities are not major (except DVR you are right) and the base of the apps looks (for me) healthy and I am sure they will be able to deploy back the functionnalities that are missing (hope so !

Mine too: it does not load any of my photos at all. Very simple, clean and efficient.

Try signing out and in again.

That’s what worked for me. But anyway it’s a very primitive app. Looks like something that was made over a weekend.

I just loaded the photo app for the first time since they were removed from the main app.

I was using Plex as my main photo app and really didn’t mind that it was split into a separate app now, but it seems half-baked and buggy just like the update of the main app…

Wow, it actually worked, thanks. Though Timeline still doesn’t, which they have been “listening to” but again have yet to fix on their “2x” faster development platform (I believe Elan was quoted as stating).

This app is trash.

Really? Sure you posted negative comments prior, but take a look a the year long now feedback on Sonos’ terrible fall from grace and the overwhelmingly negative response from LOYAL long-time users from day one!
You admit that you haven’t even tried key features. Who bought you out?

At the same time this now greedy company announces a huge price increase, + separate costs for once free remote access + a terrible iOS/iPad app with too many missing features and poor/slow response + jerky playback and suddenly all is light and glory?

Spend some quality time with this awful new app/pricing/feature split-out then come back and give us AN HONEST assessment, otherwise for too many of us regretting we ever opened the Plex email you seem to have drank the cool-aid.

I wouldn’t say the Photos app is trash but it definitely needs some love. It’s probably something made quickly mostly as a proof of concept.

I have my photos categorized in different folders

Holydays
   Rome (2015)
   London (2016)
   Crete (2019)
Family
   Birthdays
   Christmas
Pets
   Cats
   Dogs

and so on.

In the Web app and in the old iOS app, every category and subcategory had a custom poster and background. In the current app there is only an ugly folder icon. Doesn’t look good.

The background pictures have a tint overlay. Why? I like my photos as I took them and published them. If I wanted a tint overlay I would have set it up myself in Photoshop.

I don’t know who has the ball on this app - would it be the Lab, @elan?

Anyway, it’d be great if someone gave it a makeover
