New LG webOS App Preview

And yet not one compliment on the app being snappy, it’s all bad and needs rewriting you say. I think it’s time for you to roll back.
I totally disagree with you, it’s a massive step forward for a PREVIEW and a update within 3 Days. Now that’s a fantastic developer team’s commitment.

Thank you Plex

All good until ‘screen saver’ cuts in (even though it’s set to OFF in the app) or something times out and the screen stays black. Hardwired network connection to TV from server.
The only way to recover app control is to switch TV off and on!

I’m adding a few more findings:

Items are buffering a lot more than usual, even with items that should not be buffering. They don’t seem to be transcoding.

When I play music, and the screensaver starts, at the time the music comes to an natural end, the screensaver freezes and I’m unable to go back to the dashboard. Only app restart fixes this.

Can you provide us with any details?

If you use back it will return to a usable screen

Sorry if my views annoy you, just my honest first impressions. Design is a personal taste thing, to me it seems cheap and has a less quality feel about it.

There’s a reason I didn’t compliment it on being snappy. It’s because on my TV [LG OLED 55B7V] it is no quicker than the old app. Don’t get me wrong it’s responsive and fine to use but then I never had a problem with that aspect of the app anyway? Was always very responsive.

As for rolling back yes indeed I can but it will only be a temporary hold off until the new design is pushed out properly won’t it. Hence my desire to air my feelings in the very slight chance it may change things for the better.

First thing I tried. No joy.

My problem is erratic, it keeps coming back, happy to help gather additional information if needed to understand the problem. I have no connectivity issues with the old app.

I was unable to find a way to disable subtitles or search for other subtitles, I searched all possible menu’s with no luck.
I can’t understand why you would complicate things for users in such a way, I understand wanting to redesign the app and such but taking away simple options like selecting the audio and sub track when playing and item or even before playing it from the episode/movie selection menu is just bad planning sorry.

I also had the message saying it could not connect to my server (yes, insecure connections are allowed) but the thing was the message was displaying over movie posters for available plex movies and would not go away, I was able to access the settings from the side menu but it looked hella weird.

I am a long time plex user and plex pass holder, I keep my server on the beta track for updates but this app update just annoyed the hell out of me, rolled back to the previous version. Hope this gets fixed before we are all forced into this new app design.

I recall when they released the last app - a big leap forward from the previous iteration in itself - there was a long thread on here titled “who gave you the courage to release this garbage” and calls to go back to the earlier gen. There is always resistance to change and people who prefer the status quo and those views should be respected as should yours.

This is just a preview - not the finished article and the old app is still available. It is a little rough around the edges and missing some features of the previous gen but the improvements are already more than enough to make this my daily driver. Dev team should be proud of this app and the speed at which first fixes have been implemented. Big thank you

LG C9, software version 4.80.03, Plex client version 5.0.11, Plex platform version 4.8.0, Plex server 1.19.4.2935

I was trying to set up live TV + DVR today with this new app, and hit some weird issues:

  • The “Browse” tab shows a notice saying that my PC “is currently unavailable”, even though it’s on and I can access regular Plex content on it:

If I click “Retry Connection”, I get this in my logs:

192.168.0.22 is the TV. So it seems like it is actually able to connect.

  • Selecting a show in the guide sometimes does nothing, but some do work (haven’t figured out a pattern)
  • Selecting a show in “what’s on” just shows a blank screen

(High bitrate/HDR content consistent buffering) also have a lg 4k tv and finding 4k movies are all constantly buffering every few secs seems ok playing mkv mp4 ect from pc to tv over lan also plays ok with files on the cloud to tv but any 4k content over 2000 kbps impossible to watch am using direct connection to router with 540mps down 38 up also magic wand not working as others have said

Frequent buffering of a 1080p file that plays without buffering on the old app. This is a direct stream with the container transcoding from mkv to mpegts and audio transcoding from DCA 5.1 to AAC 5.1.

Are you referring to before starting a movie/TV show?
Like, you go to the Season page or movie page and want to change the information?

What you are looking for, at least for the episode/movie selection is (for episode, highlight the episode) then click the more button and then from that menu click Settings.
On the settings screen, you can then go to Streams and choose your subtitle, audio and I found, if you have multiple versions of the episode/movie, you can change which version you are watching.

To change while you are watching, press up or down on the control pad and then click the gear icon (to the left) and you will be brought to the same menu.

Not sure if that is what you were referring to, but I found those yesterday when looking at the app (the rest is not directed to you, I’m just adding since I made this post).

I don’t use the LG app as I have a SHIELD TV that I prefer, but I noticed one of my users that did was using SRT subtitles (which were external) and it causing the server to burn them, so I wanted to check it out and ended up finding out about this preview.
Despite everything I tried, external SRT subtitles were burned in (I didn’t check any file with internal SRT subtitles to see if that caused the subs to be burned in as I read a few posts where it didn’t happen for internal). If that is true though, I can’t think of any reason why external SRT subs should be burned in when internal subs aren’t. Also, I don’t see why the subs can’t be transcoded to a format that the LG app supports if it’s an issue of the app not supporting SRT as I have seen subs transcode to at least WebVTT (possibly even to ass, but don’t hold me to that).

It’s not so much a resistance to change, more just change just for the sake of it. It’s the old story of bells and whistles in place of substance.

Genuine question, not trying to be clever or anything. You say improvements are already more than enough to make this your daily driver. My question back is what improvements? From my user experience I honestly can’t see anything different apart from UI changes that have just introduced more button clicks?
It works as quick as last version, it plays everything fine, just as last version. I’ve had no problems with 4k stuff and transcoding with the new version as others seem to have had on here but then old app done the same?

Honestly it’s a perfectly good app that plays my content fine and like everything Plex introduces I’ll have to just put up with it or find an alternative as it continues to work but just gets a little more frustratingly worse in the experience. It’s just the fact that it now involves more clickey, clickey of the remote and looks a bit worse. That doesn’t seem a good move to me.

NEWS Flash.

All I can say, an edit from the first post.

Known Issues / Limitations:

Magic Remote is not currently supported
This will be added later in the preview
Default H.264 Level changed from 5.1 to 4.1
Subtitle offset options are missing
This will be added later in the preview
Transcoding video when playing TrueHD audio track (with or without subtitles)
This will need to be investigated
Selecting subtitles from pre-play takes more steps
We’ll be reducing the clicks required, but in order to offer more pre-playback options it won’t be the exact same as before
In-player playback info missing
High bitrate/HDR content consistent buffering
This is a hardware issue, unfortunately the speed improvements still don’t make up for the CPU being unable to process video over a secure connection quickly
Subtitles do not have an outline and font / size is different
TV Show Theme Music
Unable to change language / search term when searching for subtitles
Unplayed filter not working correctly

@markus101 FYI, the screen saver on the new early access build on LG webOS does not look at “include in dashboard” settings on libraries it pulls thumbnails from. This can lead to some embarrassing moments depending on the reasons why one would keep certain libraries away from the dashboard. The current workaround is to just disable it altogether, but that’s not the default setting, so you’re 100% gonna want to fix that problem before you ship this version.

I’m just glad I discovered the issue at home by myself due to this pandemic, and not when I had company over.

Additionally, it would be nice if subtitle search was based on the episode or movie title as opposed to the file name. Or if you could just edit what was being searched for instead of being stuck with whatever you have.

Thanks this is the least intuitive way of accessing subs but at least I can now disable them.

I still think if your current way of doing something works better that the new one then you should reconsider why you are changing it at least :woman_shrugging: it really makes no sense to me from a development stand point, and I don’t think it is subjective if they already know it takes much more work than before as clarified in the known issues post.

New app doesn’t connect to my local server. All other apps I have (web, sonos, windows, mac) work just fine. I’ve tried reinstalling and didn’t help. I haven’t figured out how to go back to the old app, It would be helpful if you could make it more prominent.

Other “regression” from the prior client. Previously, if you paused a video and switched to another input/app, the client would stay paused. This was useful because you could go back to the app and start back where you left off like other apps work (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc.). Now, the new client has removed the X button to indicate stopping playback, and swapping to another app/input automatically takes you back to the home screen.

This is actually a major issue for people running webOS 2 or 3 because of the below bug which remains unsolved. It basically means you cannot leave the Plex client at all, or else you’ll be forced to resume playback, which if you were transcoding, is basically a no-go. So not only is it inconvenient, it basically exacerbates a critical bug which seems highly unlikely to actually ever be fixed.

EDIT: I can’t resume playback at all for this movie. Even if I select to start from where I left off, it always starts from the beginning, including the preroll.
