Been happening over the last few days playing 4k HDR on my 2019 tube player. I can’t find the pro anywhere.
Same issue as last described a few comments back. Sometimes things play fine, sometimes the play/pause button becomes laggy and unresponsive. trying to bring up the menu sometimes lags really badly. Last night it caused the whole shield to reboot when nothing would respond for over 2 minutes.
Guys please fix this. this is ridiculous. It’s been plagued with issues since december! I can’t return it anymore and I am stuck with a lemon. I only use the tube for plex and nothing else. Don’t care for netflix or other streaming services at the moment.
Try new Beta: Player: reduce memory requirements for playing high bitrate content.
Can confirm this has not fixed the issue.
Hello, i have exactly same issue 4K 10bit HDR files doesn’t work with new player
Can anyone confirm this is still an issue on the Nvidia Shield 2019 standard “tube” model?
I have read anecdotal evidence that a recent update has fixed the stuttering / crashes when using the shield as a plex client for 4K 10bit HDR content.
I am still having issues with everything updated to latest (non-beta) versions as of May 30th.
Sadly with all the issues the tube seemingly has, not just with Plex, it wasn’t so much, biting the bullet, as shooting yourself with it. ![]()
Hi,
For me at least, the problem is still present with the official Plex app in version 8.1…
New hotfix 8.1.1+ release notes indicate they found a memory leak in their Dolby stack that was hogging hundreds of MB of Ram. I no longer have the tube, but that sounds like that could potentially fix some of these issues. If you want to try it out go to the website and pop in your serial number. Be sure to read the caveats before installing.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunaly, it did not help in my case…
Also having this problem. I think I’ll probably just return my new tube and get the pro and see if that fixes my issue.
I just switch to Plex for Kodi when I have issues, not ideal but a workaround until Plex and/or Nvidia finally figure out and fix whatever the issue is. The device can obviously play the files without issue since they work in Plex for Kodi and VLC so its not a straight up hardware limitation but some sort of software issue.
I’m sick of Plex’s constant issues that I’ve moved over to Plex for Kodi full-time now. It not only plays everything (4K included) but also fixes some recent audio issues that Plex introduced with a recent update where all my AAC 5.1/7.1 audio sounded muffled. No amount of setting tweaking or plugging HDMI cables into my Bluetooth soundbar helped, but Plex for Kodi did. ![]()
Nvidia just updated to 8.2.0 but issues remain.
I assume that means you already updated to 8.2.0 and tested it? My tube is a dead weight, I had to go back to my stupid Apple TV4k because of the 4k plex issue on the Shield.
Yes I attempted to play a movie I know causes Plex to freeze up and it did.
Yeah, it looks like some memory leaks from the Plex player itself, using Emby or Kody, let alone streaming the file through M3u from many IPTV player plays the file correctly.
If a Fire TV 4K can play these files, I can’t see why a Nvidia Shield cannot.
I also tried a fairly compressed 4K file on Plex, crash, a highly compressed 4k, crash, it’s a mix bag, whereas it plays the file flawlessly using the other apps, and, somehow, the plex kodi add-on doesn’t have this issue but I’m not a fan of the UI.
These files doesn’t cause any crash using the web app, it’s clamped to the Android player
I think its time to accept that Plex is unable or unwilling to fix this issue and switching to Plex for Kodi or going out and buying the Shield Pro are the only solutions. Kodi should have Dolby Vision support it next update which is the only feature I miss right now.
I’ve done some testing.
Playing a high bitrate DV file from the start “works” but will stutter on occasion. If I try to resume a DV file one of two things happen. Either it falls back to HDR or the player completely freezes up and needs to be power cycled.
For non DV content it’s a mixed bag, but I do encounter stutter in full BR rips.
So whilst DV is a larger issue, it’s a lack of memory management or an incompatibility at a hardware level with the tube version of the shield, but then again according to report the same file play fine in Kodi.
