My Roku Plex app just updated today. I’m shocked at how bad it is from a user perspective. What happened to my left sidebar navigation? It was a BIG pain just to figure out where all of my server videos, pictures, TV shows, movies went. Absolutely TERRIBLE!!! but even worse, what happened to the continue watching and their recently loaded movies and shows? How could Plex let this happen when I have been a member of Plex for a very very long time? I guess you got a bunch of those jackass engineers too.
I don’t have lifetime Plex Pass. I pay for this every year. This change is horrible. I will not renew if this crap keeps up. Revert back to the proven UI!
Horrible update and it locks sometimes and you can’t do anything. Exiting to home screen and going back into Plex doesn’t fix it, you have to reboot your Roku. What idiot at Plex designed this? Fire everyone!
Roku needs to stepup and share some of the responsibility and put pressure on Plex and tell them go back to the UI that was usable. I’ve used Plex for many years, from their beginning and to see this TERRIBLE change is well, I can’t write the words, it wouldn’t be appropriate. If anyone at Plex reads these reviews and actually uses the app, they know and need to also stepup and correct this.
The problem is I think the people that designed this bad update and the ones who approved it don’t use the app. It’s all about pushing other agendas. And that doesn’t include ease of use for us.
WHoever requested or approved the UI change should be fired. I know that sounds harsh, but simply put, this is a usability disaster. I’ve been a Plex Evangelist for many years. And tonight, I find myself having to apologise to the very people I advised to get Plex/PlexPass.
I see a lot of folks recommending JellyFin and will be migrating to it this weekend. That said, I’m genuinely hoping for a sudden outbreak of common sense from Plex. Otherwise I would expect Plex to fold in the not too distant future, for failing to listen to their customers. How many people remember the once-dominant Blackberry, who were foolish enough to make that very mistake?
Changes like this are usually driven by marketing twits and approved by management ninnys. Your Devs are typically either head-nodders or very slightly resistant, at best.
Wow; Blackberry, it’s good to know there are still some of us old guys out here that remember.
The wiki link is totally off topic and will be my last post but hopefully there is some real engineer at Plex who stumbles across this?
P.S. remember SIMTEL 20 or FTP
Cheers AfterBurner
This new UI change is the best advertisement for Jellyfin I have ever seen.
It’s more like AI engineering. This train wreck seriously reminds me of my experiments with using AI to write code.
I work for a software company and we have reverted deployments that were not nearly as bad as this one. Roll it back!
I agree with each and every one on this forum. It would be nice to hear an apology from Plex and to hear their plan to rectify this. I think, as well as the “We’re sorry“, they should reinstate the previous version that we were all happy with and if they need to update (For whatever reason) they must thoroughly test it. I’m going to give them a week to sort this, then it’s goodbye Plex and hello Jellyfin. I think that’s more than a fair time span. They have all our emails, so it wouldn’t be difficult to let us know what’s happening. Good luck Guys.
Yeah, I could totally imagine this having been done with “vibe coding”
Loaded Jellyfin this afternoon, works great, has all the necessary navigation, you know things like recently added and continue watching, as well as all of the necessary configuration capabilities. Saying goodbye to Plex.
Plex you did it to yourself.
I moved on, as well. I feel like Emby understands me in ways Plex apparently did not,
I completely agree, the missing sidebar is a bad idea. The UI is terrible, it takes me many more clicks to find what I want to watch. Crap like this makes me question why I’m using Plex.
Learning how to use an app once is ok, having to learn it again as the UI designers make things worse is a waste of my time.
As a many, MANY year user of Plex, I have now moved to Emby due to the disaster that is the newest “upgrade”.. It is a study in what NOT to do when it comes to usability and not listening to your customers, but instead doing (misguidedly) what you think will increase your profits.
Over the years I’ve very much been a Plex evangelist - so much so that I spent most of my Saturday moving non-technical friends and family members over to Emby (they hate the new UI, as well) and will be moving 4 more over tomorrow. So, thanks Plex - for not only ruining my home media library experience, but for screwing my whole weekend in the process.
Amen brother.
I did a Google search on how I can remove my lifetime membership to PlexPass. This is the results I got back. I’m going to give it a try
