New Plex Media Server TV show/series scanner and agent preview

Running a quick test now on the build – I assume its okay to use https://app.plex.tv now and that localhost is not needed anymore.

Also, I noticed no upgrade library option like we have with the movie agent so I needed to manually adjust the library to use the new scanner/agent.

Spotted something else interesting. After upgrading and refreshing my tv library its metadata size is now significantly smaller…

Before:
11G /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Metadata

After:
6.2G /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Metadata

Guess its more efficient.

The legacy agents will download previews of thumbnails for all show and season posters which can add up even if they’re only previews. The new agents (both for movies and TV) don’t store these and we only fetch them when editing a poster and will only save them locally if you actually select it.

This is a potential reason for the smaller size.

It’ll be dependent on your internet speed mostly but it’s not something most people will be doing a lot so it make sense to rather do it on demand.

Yes I would expect but I wonder why it’s slow for you then. It loads quite quickly on my end, fast enough not to really be that noticeable after the images start loading.

We are planning on improving the edit modals at some point so we’ll be optimizing how these images load to prevent them all just getting loaded at once.

Oh well, it would be a problem for me. Weeks ago, I started a personal project of mine to edit ANY movie inside a big movie library to make sure that German cover art is being used (for a library which was filled by the legacy movie agent).
I checked every movie item for the most fitting cover poster art (German title) and I detected that while my library language is set to German, more often than not, Plex chose a non-German cover art for me - while German art would have been available sometimes. If not available, I often uploaded fitting cover art from my collection.

I would not have done such a massive task if I had to wait for each poster art collection to load.

I do not qualify as “most people” but I would be happy if you do everything you guys can to make it as comfortable as possible for people who choose to do such “collector’s work”.

Number one - of course - is to present a new way for third party agents and metadata scanners - for movies as well as for TV shows

Thank you in advance (and I don’t want to kidnap this nice thread). I am happy to see your wonderful level of support and your dedication to help folks. Ten thumbs up for that.

Thanks for the post.

Yes, the problem now is that the web page forces you to wait for all the images to load before you can continue which is really annoying. I have a bug report filed for this but it hasn’t been high enough priority to be looked at yet. I’ll prod at somebody to see if we can get this on someones plate.

Can I ask what/when are the plans and timeline for TVDb API v4?

We plan to upgrade after some known API issues on TVDBs end have been addressed but we don’t have a timeline.

Any update regarding reading from nfo files?

Does the new agent should improve cache size for PhotoTranscoder folder ? I have two libraries (Movies & TV) using new agent each time and have over 288 GB :frowning:

Did you see this comment? Metadata can be. (I’m curious about PhotoTranscoder specifically too.)

No work on NFOs yet. It’s in a long list of things I need to look at

I nuke that photo transcoder (along with some other stuff) weekly via a cronjob. It goes out of control unless managed.

For everyone show has participated in the preview testing I just want to give HUGE thanks! There has been a ton of invaluable feedback from here which has helped us iron out a ton of issues.

As you may have seen the public beta has been released (Plex Media Server - #405 by drzoidberg33) now and this thread can peacefully be put to rest.

For future bug reports on the agent now please feel free to post them in the Metadata section: Metadata & Adding Files - Plex Forum

Anyone using the preview builds should update to the newest beta, at some point in the next week you will no longer be able to create new TV agent libraries with these builds. It is also highly recommended to remove any test libraries you had with the preview builds and create them new on the public release.

I just noticed a UI/UX issue in the public beta.

When changing the Scanner to Plex TV Series, the Agent is automatically changed to Plex TV Series (BETA) - as expected.

But although the Agent pulldown is changed automatically, the other available settings aren’t changed. I still see the settings for TheTVDB.

If I poke at Agent first manually, everything works as expected.

Tested in both Firefox and Safari. Video attached.

settings.mov.zip (12.3 MB)

(Edit: I’m not sure if this is related to the beta/preview at all. Looking around I think it’s been here for a while.)

That’s a known issue in the web client that hasn’t had time to get patched yet. You should only use the Agent dropdown (it will fail to save if this is done incorrectly).

I haven’t read this entire thread but was there a reason somewhere for not having IMDb ratings for TV?

They were removed from the preview build at the last minute because we hadn’t yet made them available at the episode level. It will be making a return though!
