In the last two days my new Plex server has stopped working properly for all clients. Running Windows Server 2019, AMD Epyc 8 core CPU, 48GB Ram SSD for boot and applications. Storage is on a NAS until I can get new drives purchased to build out the new server with local storage. (I have been using an application server and NAS setup for years just fine. Old server was an i5-7500 with 32GB ram, SSD boot and 10 gigabit ethernet. Just like the new server)

I have gigabit fiber from Sonic.net with a publicly accessible WAN IP (I am not on CGNAT)

I noticed my local clients were all transcoding as they were going through a relay.

I have 192.168.1.1/24 specified as LAN clients. Made no difference. My desktop, laptop and Nvidia shield are not direct playing.

I have a port forward setup on my Ubiquiti UDM, ports and IP match up fine. I also have TCP and UDP rules in Windows server firewall to allow the correct port.

I can change the settings all day and I’ll get a green check for remote access. Then it goes unavailable outside your network after a couple minutes.

I’m at my wits end…

Attach the full set of log files. Five lines is not enough to diagnose the problem.

You have a local network, not remote access, issue. Fix that first, before worrying about remote users.

If you’ve no other subnets, do not enter the same subnet as your server. As noted on the configuration page, the devices on the same subnet as the server are considered local.

If you do have other subnets, there is no space between them. 192.168.1.0/24,192.168.2.0/24 not 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24.

Here’s a laundry list of things to check:

  1. Reboot your modem/router/switches/Ubiquiti/etc devices. Then reboot your Plex server.

  2. Check settings for default gateway on your Plex server. Make sure it points to the correct address.

  3. Check IP address, subnet mask, etc. Make sure there’s no typo.

  4. Check the interface setting on the Plex server. Make sure it is configured for a private, not public network. Windows 10: Settings → Network & Internet. Not sure about WS2019.

  5. Try using public DNS servers such as 1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9, 8.8.8.8.

It never worked. That was Plex Media Server trying, and failing, to establish remote access.

For poops and laughs I uninstalled plex, restarted the server (again). Reinstalled plex and things seem to be working fine now without having to change anything…
