New Synology update September 2019 is not working and I'm unable to make it work or al least to download an older version

Server Version#: Synology 218+ 2 bays
Player Version#:1.16.5.15528e8d0c785
Well that’s pretty much it. first Plex would recommend me to download the new version for my server, which I first did and big mistake, it would recognise the subfolders where my media is so I can’t even select them properly. Problem was solved simply by uninstalling that version and download the old one from Synology’s interface. It went back to working just fine. Today Synology was the one asking me to update (you may want to know that I read somewhere that the version that was showning on people using Plex on Synology was not the right version, thus the problem), so I sais -if Synology is proposing this update from their dedicated App Store I guess it’s because this is the right version for my systems. Turns out I was wrong, it all went back just like with the wrong version, unable to watch most of my media, only some are accessible, unable to select again the right folder for re indexing because it just won’t show up. I don’t know what to do, and at the end of the day I am in deed paying for something that should just work

Hello mate! thank you for replying. I actually did, I downloaded the version according to the model I have 218+ which according to what I found on Plex site is the 64 bit. Yet, that version doesn’t not work even though I download it from Plex’s website

I’m able to properly install Plex server on Synology, the package runs fine. But there are several bugs. For instance, not all my media is available. When I try to edit my library to delete one folder source to select it again and prompt a re indexing and scanning, I’m unable to open any subfolders that are shown on the left column. Thus, I’m unable to select the folder that contains my media. This is all because I’m not running the right version, in my opinion. To be honest I never had problems with any previous versions of Plex or its updates. is just this recent one that has screwed everything and I don’t know what to do to fix it. I wish I could just download again the old version that worked like a charm

And do you honestly think that this was caused all of the sudden by the update? seems like I’m better off without the update. I managed to find one of the old versions that I dowloaded on my Mac to instal manually on Synology. I installed again and it works perfectly like it always did. Don’t know if I should get the update and ho through the hassle of setting permissions etc. Is it somehow dangerous to do so? to use an older version? is just that all the updates I tried the completely mess with my Plex server

Thank you so much for all the help you have given me, you have been truly helpful and it’s very, very nice so I really want to take a moment to thank you. And lastly, and hoping not being to demanding, would you be able to tell me which file should I download taking into account that I have a Synology 218+. The website (official Plex website) to make all your downloads gives me many different choices for Synology and I never know which one to take. I usually download the 64x but that’s the one that keeps bugging

Wow dude, you don’t have to be so condescending. I’ve been nothing but nice to you. learn who to be a little be nice to other people.
My problem is that this is some how advance to me, I don’t really know how to use terminal and I’m afraid of messing something up. You don’t have to get all nasty about it

I don’t understand why are you being so agressive though, the whole post was hidden because people were sensible about it. I’m just trying to be polite, I’m new to this kind of things, sorry it bothers when people are just trying to be polite and grateful. Just don’t egress people and make it seem as you’re trying to help them when you are actually just treating them like inferiors because the aren’t as savvy as you are about this. Just stop replying since I don’t want the post to be hidden again.

If I may assist here?

Issue #1:

As trumpy pointed out.

Is the first and most common step to take. In 99% of the cases, it solves the problem.

Everything you describe in the above is indicative of this condition.

Have I misread?

As follow-on to my statement above,

In the referenced Security Change notice, I detailed how I had removed Administrator privilege from PMS when it installs.

Because of this, username Plex was reduced “normal user” status.
On Linux, unless the owner of the files (your Synology username in this case), gives another username permission to read those files, permission will be denied. AKA. Plex can read, browse in this case and populate that left pane you describe as blank.

Everything you’ve described is 100% consistent with Read permission having been removed.

The same type condition exists on other operating systems. There are even folders in Windows you can’t see unless you’re an Administrator. Linux is no different.

Does this help explain what is happening?

Thanks trumpy81. I was running into the same issue and the walk through on the permissions page was exactly what I needed. Issue resolved.

Thank you so much for all you help and kindness! Although I’m somehow used to work through regular user interfaces, every time I see that I have to use terminal and codes I get kind of scared, I’m always worried about doing a small mistake and make things worse. But I should have read the whole thing and pay more attention, at some point I just got upset that this guy was straight up talking down on me. Yeah I might be quite dumb about this but it is exactly why I ask for help, and you are going to offer it, show some patience. I was having truble understanding why I had to do all that now since every other time that I updated Plex manually on Synology it worked perfectly without me having to do anything else
In any case I was able to download the latest version, did a manual install, again had the same bugs and issues and indeed when I checked on users, plex user had no permissions for anything, I changed that gave it read and write permissions and now it all works fine! Thank you so much for stepping in. Then again, sorry I write a lot, I just like to be really clear and take the time to explain myself and to thank the other person by showing some gratitud. Again, thank you so much for all your help and have a great day!

I’m sorry how things worked out but hope you’re now back to things working.

The TL;DR of why the changes were made (automatic -> manual)

  • Your personal privacy is fully under your control
  • PMS can’t see anything you don’t want it to
  • Your media can’t be deleted by PMS unless you allow it

I’m sorry, I’m having a hard time understanding. I don’t know what TL;DR is. If I’m not mistaken PMS stands for Plex Media Server, am I right?

I’m sorry. TL;DR is, as I understand, internet short hand for Too Long; Didn't Read meaning “the essentials are:” I don’t understand the etymology of the term either (old school here).

Yes, PMS = Plex Media Server.
