New to NAS and needing help!

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2673
Player Version#: 6.10.1

Just migrated my PMS from Mac to Synology DS1019+. Overall smooth experience, all things considered, but I’m having two issues that I’m not able to figure out. Read MANY posts and still cannot track down what is causing the issue(s).

4k Direct Play to Apple TV continues to lag, overall performance is seeming slower than what I had with a 10 year old Mac Mini. A little frustrated with that.

2nd issue is more pressing. The Server is continuing to drop it’s connection to the outside world. Have the static IP and port forwarding set up, still no luck. It will connect when I click retry and be available to users for around 30 minutes or so and then drop off again. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Error Log - PMS.txt (54.2 KB)
Attached is a log I pulled just after the PMS connection dropped.

The status in PMS remote access settings sometimes provides false negatives, incorrectly indicating remote access is unavailable.

Verify via canyouseeme.org. If it shows your server is reachable, then users should be able to stream remotely.

Also check out uptimerobot.com. It performs a canyouseeme.org type check on a periodic basis and sends an e-mail if the connection is unavailable. I’ve been using the free version for a few days and it seems pretty good.

FYI: Here’s some good reference material. Nothing specific to your post. Just good info to have on hand. I run PMS on a DS918+ and the docs have helped me several times.

Synology FAQ

Thanks so much for the response. Using canyouseeme it looks like the port is correctly configured. I’m back in the PMS settings and it’s still showing as not open

Any ideas on how to clean up that end of things?

Does remote streaming work?

It’s very odd. Works for me on my phone (on cellular) but doesn’t work for ANYONE else I am sharing to. Really have no idea what’s going on with it.

Created a new account to share and test with. When logged in with this account it’s showing as offline but is definitely not.

Confirmed. I can’t get ANY other account to work except mine. Mine works just fine on cellular so I know that the port should be fine. Is there something user-specific that I’m missing?

You have remote access working, since you can access your server remotely.

Something is happening with sharing, which is a separate issue.

Does the test account you set up have it’s own e-mail and login at plex.tv?

Did you accept the invitation sent to that e-mail address?

If so, try the following:

On a desktop/laptop on your network (i.e. same as your server), open an incognito (or private) web browser window.

  1. Go to plex.tv and login using the test account.
  2. Can you successfully login?
  3. If so, what do you see?
  4. Can you access account settings?
  5. Do you see the on-demand sources - Movies & TV, Web Shows, etc?
  6. Do you see the shared libraries from your main account?

Get sharing working for the test account. Then test remote access using the test account.

Note that the on-demand content streams from Plex servers, not your server. You should be able to access it from the test account even without any shared libraries.

Remote Access and Server Sharing

Creating and Managing Server Shares

I have excepted the invitations and on the mobile app can see the HAL9000 server that was just built, however it says online.

When running through your incognito test I am only able to see the Plex on-demand items. Nothing from the server that I built. Love this as a test option and appreciate the idea. Any thoughts on what could be doing this or where I should look? All permissions have been granted and no restrictions are in place.

Thanks again

You should see “More” below that (screenshot below). Click on it. You should then see the server and shared libraries. You can then choose which libraries to “pin” to the home page.

To pin a library to your home page, hover over it with your mouse. Click on the three vertical dots on the right. You’ll see an option to pin.

If needed, you can reset your home screen customization in Settings → Plex Web → General → Reset Customization (https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/web/general)

Unfortunately I am not seeing any extra options besides the Plex On-Demand items. Do you possibly need further logs to look at? I still feel like something network related is going on as the remote access page has flipped back and forth constantly.

I also temporarily changed my PW and had a friend try on their end. It did work, so I am really at a loss…LOL. I’ve read SO MANY articles from @ChuckPa and they’ve gotten me close but still not 100%

Did you try resetting customization in Plex web?

Try this:

  1. Using incognito window, and test account, login to https://app.plex.tv/desktop

  2. Go to Settings -> Plex Web -> General -> Show Advanced

  3. Click on Reset Customization
You should get a Plex Web setup screen, showing you the libraries shared with the test account and the on-demand libraries, with check boxes to pin them to the home page. Select the items you want to pin to your home page and click Finish Setup.

See screen shot below. “Movies-Stream” and “TV Shows-Stream” are the libraries I share with my test account.

When I click Finish Setup, I see the selected items listed on the left side of Plex Web (see below).

Just tried that. Not seeing the “- Stream” options at all. I have, however, excepted the invites and see the server on the mobile app, it just shows offline. It’s like something server-side is giving me the grief.

If you’d like I can share with you if that’d make it easier

I’ve really tried everything, from removing users, re-sharing, etc. The only account that can reach remotely is my own. Any thoughts are greatly appreciaited.

Welp. Not really the way I wanted to do this but here’s my “fix”. I changed nothing about the port forwarding, changed the IP of my Mac Mini back to what the NAS had and we’re back in action. And actually seems faster than going directly from the NAS in the house.

I went back to my original server on my MacMini and SMB to the NAS. Both hooked through my router and changed the paths of my “Movies” and “TV Shows” to point to the SMB://NAS.IP. Working great and, although I wanted to use the Mac Mini for something else, I’m happy with the results.
