No one in my family can use the new Roku App. I figured it out, and can use it. But it is counterintuitive. The new position of the libraries feels like chasing after what someone else is doing by moving it to the top. Go back to the side. My sisters,. in laws, and mother can’t find anything. My mother quit trying and is now trying to find her shows I hosted for her on other streaming services. My kids need me to find their shows for them, and once they are found, it is okay. But man, if the goal was to approach things like a Costco or Sam’s and make people hunt around to find what they are looking for, well, then job well done. But if you wanted to make something with a clean and easy UI, you had it.
This is NOT why I run a plex server for my family. I will have to look for other options. Good lord, if money is so tight, give me a clean UI for Patreon support. Anything but this.
When the Plex API becomes available I’m going to see how difficult it is to develop my own Plex Roku app. Anything would be better than what we have now. Roku
My first time coming to the Plex forum. Mainly because always in the past it was intuitive and user friendly. I used Plex for a year and paid for the lifetime subscription about a decade ago because it was so easy to use and I didn’t need help figuring anything out. This new interface change completely out of the blue with no warning is utter bs. My first complaint is that I made a bunch of playlists of my media to make things easier for my kids to watch what they wanted. From what I can tell I can no longer access the playlists that I made of my personal media library from the Roku app at all. This makes this completely unusable for me. I will be switching apps if this isn’t fixed in the next few days. The new design is the opposite of intuitive, it is way overcomplicated and makes everything much harder to do than it needs to be. I also don’t like that my hidden media folders are now visible on the front menu. This also makes this app 100% unusable for my children. I have already deleted it off my Roku for this reason alone. I still have the library on my PC for the time being but if there are not serious changes made soon you all have a lost a long time customer and will be as many getting many negative reviews from me as there are platforms that I can find you on. Please for the love of all that is good in the world please fix this horrible mistake.
I’ve often wondered about Plex’s business model of selling paid programming on top of another platform that offers paid programming (Roku) with almost nothing to differentiate one service from another. Android, and other streaming OSs do the same thing, and there is only so much demand for non-AAA content.
It would seem like a better business strategy by Plex to keep innovating to distinguish themselves from others, such as incorporating real audiobook support, or per-user photo galleries (not just one for the server) - y’know, things that actually leverage its customer base’s desire to work with and serve-up their own content.
This is by far the worse UI update I have ever seen. There seems to be very little ability to customize the UI. Very frustrating to have to change how we’ve been using it for the last what 10 plus years?
It’s not just the roku app, every platforms version of the app that has the new UI is absolute garbage, I’m very tempted to pay a few thousand dollars for a lawyer to get my $120 back for this sh***y a*s app. I don’t understand what is going thru the devs heads, it’s almost like they are trying to drive people away by making the UI unbearable and removing features on a regular basis, like why is the ability to create and edit playlists no longer available in the new UI?*
This new update is horrible. The navigation was much better on the side for all of my media libraries, at the top it is very awkward and annoying.
Bad change.
After watching a movie it no longer says ‘Watched’ at the top near the title, all it does is fill in the icon to a white circle and changes the checkmark from white to clear. Very stupid and way too subtle. It was much easier to see the way it was marked before.
Bad change.
Plex has added a stupid icon for the show before the first episode in every season. Not only is it completely unnecessary to be there but if you select it the entire app locks up afterwards. Now you can’t play anything or access any seasons for any TV shows. Returning to the Roku home screen and opening Plex again does not fix the problem! You have to reboot your Roku and enter Plex again for it to be unlocked. And if you accidentally click that new stupid season icon it will lockup again and you will have to reboot the Roku again to fix it!
Whatever idiot at Plex designed this update should be fired, everyone working on the team with that person should be fired. The higher ups that looked at this design, approved it and forced it on us without us asking for it, well they should all be fired twice!
I want the old version of the app back now! I didn’t ask for this update and I don’t want it! Now lets see how long Plex ignores us before fixing anything. My guess is we’ll be living with this mess for weeks or months before anything happens.
Plex why don’t you remember that old saying: “If it’s not broken DON’T ‘fix’ it!”
When this dropped on my Roku last night I frantically searched my emails to see if I had missed an announcement that this was being rolled out - nope. Checked the website - nope. It looks like this update has been in testing for 6 months based on the posts by PLEX. Are you seriously telling me that in 6 months of testing not a single person thought “what if I have a dozen libraries and I want to adjust the order that they appear in?” Or perhaps “I have 15 libraries and I want to be able to see more than 4 or 5 of them at a time to choose which one to watch” or perhaps “I run my own server and don’t need 4 or 5 different completely useless icons on my home screen for watchlist, live TV, or other ‘features’ that I don’t care about?” No-one?
This reminds me of the botched Plex update they did in late 2017 I believe it was. It got tons of complaints and Plex had to redesign it to fix things. It looks like they haven’t learned from their mistake because they’ve done it all over again eight years later!
Agreed. I do not want “On Demand” or “Discover”. That is literally NOT the point of a self-hosted media server. It’s now very complicated to get to my media. Roll this back or let me pick my UI. This is terrible.
The new ui is a terrible experience. unusable for viewing my own libraries on my tv, which is why I have a lifetime pass.
I would now like a refund of this, as you have apparently abandoned the user base that kept you alive for so many years.
I would like a refund of my lifetime plex pass, which i only foolishly acquired after years of annual subscriptions. Who do I talk to about that? This is a breach of warranty and usability, since it’s useless for watching my own libraries with now.
Agreed this update is the worst and they need to roll back. In the interim, for those that want their libraries to appear on the Home Screen: go to libraries and click on the ‘…’ at the end of your libraries. ‘Heart’ all your libraries and they will appear on the homepage when you open plex.
