New User Plex Setup Help

Hi.

Please can someone help… I’m brand new to Plex and am keen to get it up and running ASAP but am having some difficulty. These are my devices all on the same home network:

I have a Synology DS215j running version DSM 6.1.3-15152 update 3
BT Homehub 6
Windows 10 laptop

I am using my laptop web browser to access my Synology. I have installed Plex Media Server on the Synology (version 1.8.1.4139) . Plex Media Server is running and when I click the URL on the Synology to open Plex (https://192.168.1.254:32400/web) the URL opens a new tab on my laptop web browser and asks my to login with my Plex account. I login and this is where I get stuck … I’m faced with this screen:

Confused what I need to do??? Plex Media Server is already running on the Synology. Why can’t the browser see it?

Can someone please help? Ideally quickly as it’s driving me mad!

To begin the initial setup / first-run wizard,

Open a new tab on your browser and go to http://ip.address.of.synology:32400/web

Once you have completed the first-run/setup wizard, you will be able to find it normally.

Sorry, I tried that - was it not clear from my original post? My browser does not find the server.

Thank you. Yes it was clear. I missed it and apologize.

Does package center confirm PMS is running? When you open Resource Monitor -> Processes, do you see the actual processes running and using CPU?

If so, PMS is in the ‘run’ state already. Did you have PMS on the Syno at any point before this?

Regardless, if PMS is showing as running, we can force it back to initial first-run.

  1. Stop PMS in Package Center
  2. Open File Station, navigate to the Plex share
  3. Navigate further into the Plex share until you see Preferences.xml
  4. Delete Preferences.xml
  5. Start PMS
  6. Now use your browser again and you will find PMS waiting for you to being first-run setup again.

Thanks.

Package Center says Plex is running.
In Resource Monitor, Plex Media Server has a status of “sleeping”, using 0% CPU
I may have tried PMS before a few years ago, but can’t rememer if it was on this device or an older model
Can’t find a Plex share in File Station?

Appreciate your help so far - please keep going!

Control Panel - Shared Folders

  1. Find the Plex share
  2. Add your username to the R/W permission
  3. Close File Station and re-open it.
  4. The Plex share should now be visible
  5. If it is not visible, we will take the next step. Please let me know

Followed the steps and yes, I can now see the Plex share. What’s next?

Go back to what I said at the top.

You will then need https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288896-Basic-Setup-Wizard

Ok, done all that but still get “looking for servers” in the browser when Plex is opened. ???

Sign your browser out of your Plex account.
Close the browser
Reopen and go back to the IP of your server.

If it still cannot find it, Verify the syno and your computer are on the same subnet

If still fails, Go to into the Plex share, navigate down until you see the Logs directory.

Right click on Logs and Compress to Logs.zip.

attach the zip file here

Here is the log …

Your PC and Syno aren’t in the right network configuration

Specifically RFC-1918 Private Network (LAN) is supported. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network

You need to change your computers & network from using 138.253.1 to something in 192.168.x.x or the 10.x.x.x block

Yes - success, thank you so so much.

Changed my home network to a 192.168 range and now plex is working.

Open a new tab on your browser and go to (192.168.1.1:32400/web)

Once you have completed the first-run/setup wizard, you will be able to find it normally.
