New Xbox One App preview

Buffering is fixed but stuttering / frames issue

4K stutters/frame drops when converting DTS audio to AC3

4K plays perfect with AC3 audio and SRT subs

Playlists don’t work

Only thing I have a gripe with is the shuffle button needing an extra click to access.

The search feature should have delete and space tied to the x and y buttons which is the the only gripe I have. So far so good otherwise.

I really appreciate that the Xbox client app is receiving some much deserved attention. Kudos for that. However, only being a Plex user for about 6-7 months now, I was unaware of Plex requiring an internet connection to function. Despite your efforts on my favorite client hardware, I have to leave Plex and find a less restrictive package. I’m moving to Southeast Asia in the not too distant future and internet is notoriously off and on. It is the reason I bought a NAS. Why I can’t use “my” content on “my” LAN whether the internet is available or not escapes logic. Goodbye Plex! Admittedly not entirely relevant. It’s just I’ve been hoping for an improved Xbox client app and just when it happened, I learn Plex has a self-serving mission of some kind. I’ll find someone else to take my money.

Hello Moussa. There is a problem with the new player on Xbox One.

I suppouse that the player uses Utf-8 encoding. But it decodes all the languages except from Hebrew.
Hebrew Utf-8 srt files are in Gibberish on the player.

Consider Kodi (actually used for the purpose it was intented). I use it down at the lake where I have no internet. Just a PC and a hard drive loaded with stuff.

I’m not sure if my questions should be asked here, or if they warrant a new thread. I tried out the new app, and it seems to be working better, but here are my questions:

  1. 24p movies play at 60p. On the old app, those movies would switch my TV over to 24p, but TV stays at 60p on early access.
  2. I have a bunch of HDDVD rips that are 1080i, that are really 24p as well. It’d be great if Plex could read the 3/2 pulldown flag and play in true 24p. This would also go for DVD rips with that flag set.
  3. Are there plans to have software decoders for TrueHD and DTS HD-MA, like there are for the new Apple TV app? I don’t like that I have to transcode audio for Xbox, when it should have the horsepower to decode those audio formats in software.

@Moussa
Currently on the preview version of the app - I think. Not even sure where I can see what version I’m using.

Only got my server talking to Plex yesterday - it used to do this and stopped ages ago, now got it back up and running.

Tested a few movies on two different Xboxes as well as Apple TV. The latter is fine. The Xboxes however, hmm. Two of the movies have buffering issues, right from the off and then every minute or so. To me it seems to be in the same place every time - even on different machines!

The other two movies have what I call video tearing, image breaks up in streaks across the screen. Also, image seems to pop in and out - a change in resolution? All videos are Blu-ray 1080p.

The consoles are XBOX ONE S.

Cheers

The new app preview seems to work good for the most part, i have run into an issue where a couple of files have desynced on the audio from the picture, did not do that with the normal app. also I have one anime series I have that would not load audio in this app preview but will in the normal app.

Please advise when chapter skipping will be added as it huge miss to not include this as part of the preview.

Can you ensure the Allow Display Mode Switching setting is enabled in the preview app. If so could you enable logging to a server, try playing some media that would previously switch to a different refresh rate on the old app, and DM those server logs?

There are currently no plans at the moment to support those, but we’re looking at ways to make that happen.

It should be coming in the next update.

Where did the Library Radio feature go in the Xbox app? Can we get that feature back?

So far so good, I have only come access one problem that’s really doing my head in (literally it gives me a headache)
When resume playback of a HEVC file it seems to ay at a reduced frame rate, there’s a lot of slowdown and action scenes stutter.
Yet the audio is still in sync and plays at normal speed it’s hard to describe.

I noticed mainly when watching films, it’s like it’s in slowmo but not at the same time lmao.

I’ve been using it daily now for just over two weeks and I like it. In fairness, a lot hasn’t changed, which is not a bad thing. But almost everywhere the interface feels much improved. For example, I need to watch with subtitles and I used to always get confused with the previous icons. I think I had to go to what looked like a mixing desk icon to find the subtitle options. Now it’s easy to find in the cog icon, which clearly indicates settings. These small, but important changes have made a real difference and it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into making the whole interface slicker.

I’d also like to repeat my previous post, though. I understand the issues of privacy and the expectation to default to secure settings with websites. However, I’m not a technical person and I use Plex because it is supposed to simplify the whole process of being able to watch archived media. If I hadn’t found this thread after switching to this preview program I would have not been able to use Plex. I couldn’t even find a way to revert! Changing the connections to secure by default was a bad move. I understand you might do that for remote access, but I’m sure that the majority of Plex users, like me, would not be using secure settings within our own private local networks.

For the benefit of anyone who is having a problem with display mode switching (24fps playing at 60fps), I too was having this problem but managed to fix it tonight.

Play a video, a few seconds should be enough.
Stop the video and back out to home.
Enter settings.
Untick display mode switching.
Go back to the video and start again. Let it play for a few seconds.
Stop the video and back out to home.
Enter settings.
Tick display mode switching.

All videos should play properly now. Even after exiting Plex and re-entering.

Well finally had a chance to test a 4kHDR movie that ALWAYS starts buffering after 19 mins of playback, and this time it played past that point which is good.

However the playback was still stuttering and not nearly as good as other devices, Also the Xbox app has playback issue with DTS-MA/True-HD and other various audio formats.

So while improved now it is not nearly as good at all around playback as the Vero + 4k i now use as my primary Plex client. I can throw anything at the Vero and it plays it great.

Loving the app. I have one very small annoyance.

Specifically when watching a TV show, on the screen when one episode ends and the next is counting down the app used to show the episode title and the episode number. Now it only shows the title.

For me, while watching a TV show I like to know where I am in the season, especially when I’m nearing the season finale. Now, without the episode number, I have to bring up Wikipedia or something separately to figure out exactly which episode I’m on. Wishing they’d just put the episode back into the loading screen.

Hi, new app looks fine - testing on Xbox. I have not spotted any other issue but with subtitles. Subtitles are utf-8 encoded with Czech language and when I switch to old app it is working fine, however with new one, special characters are missing or are wrong.

Any help with this? I tried to go through settings but have not found anything making any difference about it.

The improved responsiveness was great, overall looked nice!

Only issue I had was that I couldn’t play music and browse photos at the same time like I could with the old xbox app. We like to play music and a slideshow at the same time, nice to have on in the background.
