New Xbox One Plex App Update (19 July 2016) - Navigation Buttons Broken

The Xbox One app just updated today and now the Forward/Backward buttons in the top right (next to Home) do random things. Sometimes they will go to the next item on deck, sometimes they will go to the end of a season. I seem to recall a long time ago we had this problem and it was fixed. Are bugs implemented on a rotation or is this a new “feature”? ;))

it is going through the list of things that you get when you hit the “more” ellipses on the bottom of a hub. Plex Media Player and other apps do the same thing.

the hub for recently released is random as far as what is shows but when you select something it goes though the list so “Marauders” would be the next thing after selecting The Do Over in this particular example. if you were in Recently Added it would be more predictable .

This is interesting because I personally only use these buttons while binge-watching a TV show.

When I start a show I’ve seen before, I mark all of the seasons unwatched so they dump onto my on-deck properly.
When viewing an episode’s page from on-deck, I personally would expect one of two different things to happen when using the nav buttons:

  1. If the episode I just finished watching has more unwatched episodes (ie, I just finished season 1 ep 19 and ep 20 exists and is marked unwatched), I would expect the nav arrow to navigate to the next episode unwatched episode of that show.
  2. If there are not any newer, unwatched episodes in that series, I would expect that button to move to the next (or previous) item in my ‘on deck’.

I understand that not everyone may want it to work this way, but I personally think this is how I would like it to work. I also believe, last I paid attention, that it does work this way (or did before the update).

So all of that is to say-- I don’t know if it’s broken for me or not. But I can certainly see how it could appear to be working randomly when it is instead using a seemingly complicated set of rules and logic to determine what the “next” or “previous” item should be.

I’ll be happy to look into it further when I get home and report my findings.

Hi there. As mentioned previously the new behaviour for paging between items is intended and not a bug. If you navigate into an item from a hub then paging will navigate between the hub items. If you navigate into an item from a library then paging will navigate between library items or show episodes.

I understand that it’s impossible to keep everyone happy, but this only has disadvantages from my usage/perspective.

I get to watch one TV show a day - busy work life - and use the On Deck to get to the next episode. No change there. After watching an episode I like to read the synopsis for the next episode. Admittedly I can select, Go Home, and the next episode is there. However, sometimes after selecting the next episode from On Deck I like to read the previous program synopsis to remind me what happened. Now that is tedious to do: select ellipsis, Season, scroll down to last unwatched. Not helpful.

That worst part is the teaching series I watch. Because we don’t have folder view I’m using the custom category option (I forget what it’s called), which means there is no On Deck. I used to go to the right: Last Watched, select the “episode” and use the navigation button to get to the next episode. Now I need to go through the ellipsis, Season, scroll down method. Horribly unhelpful.

I think the new paging between behaviour is a bug.
So I am re-watching a show and I go to recently watched - goto season and go to the next episode i want to watch. I should be able go to the next episode, but no it doesn’t.I have to go back to season and scroll thru. This waste a lot of time I think your new behaviour is CRAP and and you have not put enough thought to what the end users do.It should be changed back to the way it was. and if it not it is going to annoy alot of users.

Well said. It’s so counter-intuitive. I suspect those who think it’s a great idea mainly watch films. For someone who mainly watches TV shows it shouldn’t matter how I arrive at a particular program synopsis, if I’m looking at episode 10 of a particular season then I expect the backward/forward buttons to go to episodes 9 and 11 respectively, not episode 17 of a completely different show. I really hope they fix this. I can’t imagine what new users are going to make of this. They’ll genuinely think the app is broken.

Definately needs fixing. Makes no sense. I just want to move to the next episode not the next tv show!

I did confirm that if you just finished watching a show from your on deck, hitting the next button will bring up the next episode of that show.
This makes sense because the next episode of that show will be the newest item on your deck. Hitting backwards will be a different show, however. As will hitting next twice. But I think their thinking is that most people are ok as long as the next episode is the correct one when they hit the next arrow.

I imagine for most people, this works great, as this is most often the way I’m going to get to the next episode I need to watch and then continue watching in a binge-watching scenario.

But I understand that you might expect those buttons to take you to the next or previous show episode no matter what.
It seems to me that the obvious solution is to add an option, either server side or client side, to control this behavior. Something like ‘navigation arrows always navigate within currently displayed show’ or the like.

I’m still not sure, however, how this is different from how it was. In my limited use of those arrows, nothing seems different for me. Have we confirmed it has changed?

@Tephlon: Before the recent update the arrows navigated backwards/forwards through the episodes of the season of the TV show you currently watching/viewing.

Because I tend to watch only one program each night I rotate through a bunch of different TV shows. It can sometimes be nearly one week since I watched the last episode of a particular show, so I like to read the synopsis of the previous show to remind me what happened.

There is definitely a bug in this process. I can start a season of a show I have already watched and it will go to the next episode in the season until I hit episode 12. At episode 12 it will go back to episode 1 and I can scroll backwards to episode 12 but not forward. From this point on it will either go to episode 1 at the conclusion of the episode I am watching or the navigation buttons completely disappear.

Include me in thinking this was a horrible idea. I actually submitted a post about it myself. If I’m watching an older TV series, I will skip a lot of episodes I consider boring and now it keeps jumping to the wrong show. And even if you do go through the “season” list, it still forgets what episode you were on and jumps to 1 half the time.

The on-deck feature really is only useful for episodic content as you’d never expect a movie to show up there on its own. When I select a show to watch, I expect to be able to navigate through all the episodes in either direction without bouncing out of the show.

The default On-Deck navigation behavior makes sense to me. However, this

is absolutely infuriating! The arrows used to work just fine when first implemented, then a few updates ago it became less reliable but still worked for the most part, and now it never works. It will always go back to the first episode of the season when I click on the right arrow.

It gets so frustrating that I just switch to a different device where the arrows work reliably. I really hope the Xbox One app gets swapped out with the UWP version because the native app has been buggy and unreliable since day one. I like using the Xbox One app primarily for voice navigation, hence why I haven’t ditched it completely.

I am also now experiencing the ‘right arrow jumps to episode 1’ behavior others are describing here.

Bur I’m not sure if this bug is related to what Euler13 is describing-- they sound different to me.
I think the “forward button jumping to epsiode 1” behavior can be listed as a bug.

But changing what the arrows do from on-deck/recently released/recently added is, in my opinion, a feature request. And I think the most sensible thing to do is add an option to control this behavior. If I’m completely caught up with all my shows, and the 4 Sunday night shows I watch get added, on Monday the thing I want to do is watch those 4 episodes. Entering one of the episodes from on deck, watching the episode, and then clicking the right arrow to get to the next on deck episode, is a sensible behavior to me. Changing it outright will move the problem to a different set of users. An option to control the behavior is I think the only sensible way to solve this problem.

I’m nudging this back to the top as it was first reported in July, it still hasn’t been fixed, and it is not listed among the known issues. Could one of the developers acknowledge if this is being looked into?

Summary of bug: Navigation buttons in top right next to Home button do random things. After browsing to a particular TV show, season, episode, and watching it, the Next button often takes you to episode one of the season. Selecting Next or Back after that just gives you a thud sound effect as if to say there are no episodes in either direction.
