Hi folks! So it’s been years since I’ve used Plex (I’ve been using a flash drive and a dvd player to watch movies on my tv for years). I just got a new tv (Hisense 4k, half price at Target yesterday) that has Plex built in. I’ve got the tv connected with ethernet and wi-fi, both tested. I thought I’d installed Plex Media Server on my Windows 10 pc, watch the content on my tv and hope to use my phone to control it. Is that possible?
Then there’s Plex Media Server for Windows 7, and Plex for Windows for Windows 10, and I didn’t see anything comparing the two. The last time I used Plex directly with a tv, I had to control the content with my computer keyboard and that wasn’t fun (which is why I switched to the usb/dvd player).
Thanks everyone for helping me sort this out. For some reason I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. I used to have a Patriot Box Office and knew all this stuff…
So I got my tv sync’ed with my pc. I’m able to see all my 950+ files in my 57 folders. However, they are all bunched together with no file structure. Sure, I could sort them by year, rating, duration, plays or even progress, but I really have no need for any of that. I need the folder structure. I have everything sorted that way, Each show is in it’s own folder, then there’s movies for me, movies for me and my wife, then movies for the whole family, and so on.
Without folder structure all this is useless for me.
Plex is based on libraries now as opposed to file structure.
You should be adding a movies library and a TV show library. This may not be what you are looking for but that’s how it’s meant to be used.
You can with a Plex pass create home users and give them access to certain libraries so if you had all kids movies in one library you could limit a kids account to only kids movies or even use tagsbor ratings per movie and accomplish the same thing.
It’s a different way to think about things compared to file structure but provides much greater flexibility.
I don’t need flexibility. Once my videos have been watched they’re deleted anyway. I guess I’m going to have to stay with my flash drive anyway. At least I won’t need my dvd player anymore as I can plug the drive directly into the new tv. The old tv didn’t even have a usb port. I haven’t used a dvd in over a decade.
That’s why they have a free version so you can see what you are getting into and see if paying for it and the advanced features is something that works for you.
