No 7.1 audio

Server Version#: latest
Player version: latest
What I noticed is that plex doesn’t sound good. it doesn’t make use of the surround and rear speakers. Then when I switched to kodi, it sounded great. all 7 speakers were on. how do I have plex use 7.1 audio? I don’t see any settings for that.

How are those 7.1 speakers connected to your computer?
Do you have a AVR, connected per HDMI inbetween the PC and the TV?
Are you using Plex Media Player or are you just opening the web browser?

the speakers are connected to my Denon AVR-X3400H 7.1 AVR. the computer is connected to the AVR using an HDMI cable. The AVR is connected to the TV. Its a typical home theatre setup. I’m using both the Plex Media Server and Plex Media Player.

Open Plex Media Player
put it into the ‘TV mode’
click on your user avatar
Settings - Audio
Device Type = HDMI
Channels = 7.1
Device=pick your HMDI audio adapter

After you switched the Type to HDMI, there will be additional check boxes underneath with the various surround formats listed.
Tick all those which your AVR can decode on its own.

You can switch back to ‘desktop mode’ if you prefer it, but I don’t recommend it if you want to use ‘Allow Display Mode Switching’ as well (to adapt the refresh rate of your tv to that of the media file and thus get a judder-free video).

Otto, you’re awesome. thanks it worked. is there a site that describes what all the settings are for? the app doesn’t have any descriptions.

There are a few things here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/plex-apps/plex-media-player/

Otto, I went into the video settings and they have HW acceleration. I enabled that and now the playback isn’t choppy. thanks!!! but I noticed there were two settings: Enabled and Enabled (copy back). What is copy back? the link you posted before doesn’t answer that.

You can try both. It depends on the type of graphics adapter, which one will give better results.
