No audio for media on Xbox One

Server Version#: 1.18.1.1973 (running on Synology DS918+, so can’t update due to transcoding issue with intel driver)
Player Version#: 2.46.1.70 - Xbox One X

Issue: Xbox One for some reason is not outputting any audio for any Media. I’ve tried a number of media types, all with the same issue. AAC Stereo (TV Show), DTS 5.1 (Movie), etc. I can start a media file, and hear the Plex sounds while going through the interface, but no audio is happening while watching Media. I can exit the Media and get back to the Plex menu and the Plex menu sounds return. This setup was operational, but I’ve also been upgrading and downgrading the Plex Server version in hopes of getting up-to-date. Following my last software downgrade of Plex Media Server to 1.18.1.1973 (the last stable one for me with no buffering issues), I renamed the iHD_drv_video.so driver, so I am using the i965_drv_video.so driver on my Synology.

I’ve also tried uninstalling/reinstalling Plex from the Xbox, doing an actual shutdown/restart of the Xbox, with no change.

Per the post on how to post a problem, I’m supposed to:

  • Enable System logging on Xbox to Plex Media Server
  • Attempt to play a media file
  • Attach .zip to Post.

Although looking through the logs, there’s a lot of info in there, I have attached it to this post. Verbose logging WAS NOT enabled.

Start time on watching a movie (Heat) was 13:43 on Jan 14th.

I forgot to mention that the same media plays fine via the Web Client, iOS and Android apps.

Interesting addition - I can watch OTA and audio is fine.

another data point:

Xbox One X - HDMI -> Vizio TV - Optical Cable -> Receiver = no audio

Vizio TV running Plex app - Optical Cable -> Receiver = audio on same media

I prefer the XB1X for media since I’ve got all my other apps working fine on it for media (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu when I had a sub) and find the Vizio Plex app severely outdated compared to the media devices I have Plex on.

More info:

I can plug a set of headphones in to the controller and get audio with Media. I was able to get an info screen up for my TV where it shows the Resolution, Vertical Frequency, Audio Type, and Audio Type Out.

While playing games or moving through menus it says Bitstream. When I start Media, it goes blank and updates the Vertical Frequency from 60 to 24 for movies. I’ve tried setting my Xbox to output only Stereo, and had the same results. I tried using a different user with the same results.

I’m at a loss here… Please help.

Well, on a whim, I moved inputs on my TV and audio started working.

With my specific TV (Vizio PQ65-F1) there were reports when using an Xbox One X on HDMI input 1 would sometimes cause the picture to phase-shift, blink and then reset the image. I was having this happen on Netflix shows sometimes, and periodically games. Never had it with Plex or Amazon Prime video, but I digress.

The fix was to either change HDMI inputs or, do a reset of the XB1X video configs to 1080p, physically unplug both the TV and XB1X then reconfigure to 4K. I did that, and maybe that’s when the Plex audio problems started- I honestly don’t know since I was using Netflix most of the time then.

Well, last night I switched from HDMI 1 to HDMI 4. Audio is working fine. Using the same settings in the XB1X (Bitstream over HDMI, then Dolby Digital). I had set those up when connected to HDMI 1 and was having an audio problem. IDK man, head-scratcher.
