No audio in plex for windows

Server Version#:1.19.4.2935-79e214ead
Player Version#: 1.13.0.1275-bbd8d37b

I’m getting no audio in the windows player. This suddenly happened last night. Had the TV on and running live TV from a tuner, but was doing other things. Tried to play a recorded TV program that I’m binging, and no audio. I don’t know if the audio was already off. Wasn’t paying attention to that. But now, nothing I do in the windows player has any audio.

My server system is a PC that has the TV hooked up with HDMI. In other words, the TV is the monitor for the PC. I have been running the windows player on the same PC for months now with no audio issues.

I have two other PCs with the windows player, and audio works just fine on them. I have an android phone, and it works on that, too. Also, I can access my server on that same pc with Chrome, and that works. I also can run the plex app on the TV, a Samsung smart TV, and that works. But I hate that interface. It just has no audio when I run the windows player on the same pc that’s running the server. But it was working, and I didn’t make any changes to the settings.

I’m guessing that there’s some setting that has changed in the windows player on the server machine. But I compared the audio settings to my other PC’s, and they are the same. So, where else should I look? Is there some hidden setting that I’m not seeing? BTW, I uninstalled and reinstalled the player. I also went up to the website and downloaded the latest version and installed that. Still doesn’t work.

Now, as I said, plex runs just fine on my server machine if I run it in a browser. Maybe I should just run it that way. Is there any advantage to running the windows player over running it in a browser?

What are these settings?
If you have only a regular TV attached (and no AVR or soundbar with surround decoders), “Audio device kind” should be set to “Basic”.
If you don’t see this drop-down selector, change the “Audio Device” away from “Auto select device” to the right HDMI port.

A lot. The proper desktop apps can decode almost every Video, Audio and subtitle format on their own, while the web browser only understands very few formats. So your server will be taxed with transcoding far more often when using the web app as a player.

If you can’t find any clue what happened to the desktop app, reset it by removing its data folder. See Plex for Windows won't run - #3 by OttoKerner

Bingo! Apparently, it was a corrupted file in the settings folder. I uninstalled, deleted that folder, and reinstalled. Now it works. I did have to make some minor setting changes. Audio, for one. As you suggested in the other post, I changed that from auto to the HDMI specifically. And I set the output to 5.1 channel since audio goes to a 5.1 receiver and speakers.

Thanks very much for your help. This has been driving me nuts for a couple of days.
