No Download option

Hello, I have a plex pass, but I dont’ see an option to download, on either my windows pc or andriod. I am using the latest versions. The download option just isn’t there. Any thoughts? Thank you!

That’s from Plex’s free ad supported service (note the “On Plex” at the top-left). Downloading is not available for their content. Downloads are only available from your own server (or friends’ servers who’ve shared with you and allow it and also have a Plex Pass) for content you own/host.

Thanks for response, pshanew. So I take it I need to setup my own server then? I do have a Plex Pass, and thought downloads would be available. Or do you mean the Plex ser ver app? I have that installed too. Must be user error, just not sure where. I also have the other app, still no options to download.

Downloading from Plex’s free and rental services is not supported. Even if you have a Plex Pass. Even if you have a Plex Media Server. No downloading.

You can download your own content from your own Plex Media Server if you have a Plex Pass.

You can download from a friend’s Plex Media Server if they permit it and you both have a Plex Pass.

Downloading is supported only on the Plex mobile and desktop apps. You cannot download using a browser (Plex Web), a smart TV app, or a streaming box/stick (FireTV, Roku, AppleTV, etc.).

Thanks for response, FordGuy61. I’m more confused than ever. I thought the idea was to down to skip the commercials. When you say download my own content, I am not sure what you mean except with movies I already own. I don’t really need Plex to download those.

There are multiple parts to Plex:

On-Line Content
Plex offers online content: free live TV channels (with ads), free on-demand movies & tv shows (with ads), and movie rentals (no ads).

You cannot download any of that content. You cannot skip ads or commercials in any of that content. A Plex Pass changes none of that.

Personal Media
Plex also has Plex Media Server, which permits you to stream your own content. You run Plex Media Server on your own PC. It streams content from your PC to your phone, Smart TV, etc. that has the Plex app installed. A Plex Pass is not required, but it does enable additional features not available in the free version.

Examples:

  • Movies & TV shows ripped from DVDs or Blu-ray discs.
  • Music ripped from CDs.
  • Home movies originally recorded on your phone and copied to your Plex Media Server
  • TV recorded over the air using a network TV tuner (Plex Pass required).

If all you want to do is access the free and rental on-line content, you do not need a Plex Pass (or a Plex Media Server).

If you want to stream your personal content using Plex, then you need to run Plex Media Server.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

Thanks for your follow up. I was definitely already doing some of that (with my own media). I guess I misunderstood what was available to download.

Thanks for your time, and response.
