No option to turn off subtitles by default on Apple TV

Subtitles are on by default. These are not burned in subtitles. I can manually turn them off but have to do so manually for every episode of every show. I have turned off subtitles completely on my Apple TV. I have also tried adjusting my Plex account settings to only show when playing foreign audio, and even manually, but none of these options work.

It’s extremely frustrating to have to turn off subtitles each and everytime, and I cannot see an option to simply turn them all off by default.

Any help will be appreciated. Reading the forums, I can see many people have had this issue but cannot see a solution for it.

That’s the correct way to configure those preferences. Which leads me to the question how you had configured the account Audio & Subtitle Settings?

If your preferred language is English, settings should look like this:

  • Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks → :ballot_box_with_check:
  • Preferred audio language → English
  • Preferred subtitle language → English
  • Auto-select subtitle mode → Show with foreign audio

Please keep in mind that Plex only applies the automatic audio/subtitle track selection for videos where you haven’t yet manually set/changed said selection.

Thanks for your assistance, the settings worked perfectly.

I had them all set as you’d described, however I didn’t have anything selected for the Preferred Subtitles Language. I’ve now selected English as you suggested, restarted Plex, and all subtitles are off!
