Not refreshing movie posters

No backups?

@preacha sorry to hear that, that stinks.

@ChuckPa I completed the removes for Data and Caches on both of my Plex servers. Validated the contents of the directories were empty, started Plex and then validated that the contents were being recreated.

After letting Refresh All Metadata complete, I still have the same issue on both servers were the posters are missing for my newer Movies.

Only two things are unique to my servers vs a ā€œtypicalā€ Plex server install on Linux…

  1. I have a /etc/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service.d/override.conf were I specify Environment="PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_APPLICATION_SUPPORT_DIR=/mnt/sdb/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support".
  2. All of my media is kept on a remote NFS share at /mnt/media/.

@CrossEye

In your case, you would remove the contents under your relocated location

Specifying this using variables: (substitute in your effective path to it)

sudo sh
cd "$PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_APPLICATION_SUPPORT_DIR/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support"

Now continue as previously instructed. (Copy/paste is recommended and why I write my instructions as I do)

@preacha

I am also very sorry for the loss of data. I hope you can find a system backup somewhere.

Hey @ChuckPa,

Yeah sorry, I should have been more clear on what I did. I already removed the contents of Data and Caches under my location and am still experiencing the issue on both servers.

With both of those cleared out, I really would like to see the logs.

If ā€œRefresh All Metadataā€ didn’t pull the metadata then we need to find out why it wont.

Okay, looks like it worked ChuckPa. Thanks

All-clear: I still had a backup and now I have my old status again. Sorry for the panic yesterday.

I tried again with emptying the cache.
Unfortunately this did not lead to any improvement for me either.

I“ve refreshed all metadata but still the newer movies show no poster. Just a thumbnail.
Log attached.

I have this problem with movie posters as well but it’s also new TV Series that aren’t pulling any data at all unless I manually match.

I put together a new server using Binhex Plexpass Docker on Unraid last week and have not been able to get the metadata for new movies or series to work correctly at all. I did move my appdata files over from my windows server and everything is working correctly on there and all of my old metadata and watch history pulled over just fine. I’ve tried deleting the cache and cookies as mentioned here. I also tried cleaning the bundles and optimizing the database but so far nothing has worked.

The situation is a bit frustrating.
The measure of deleting httpcookies didn’t help me and many others and a core function of Plex is currently not working. But there is no statement if the problem is actively worked on now.

I’m only a user like you so be nice  I’m on Linux and don’t have any problem with posters.

The latest logs I can see posted by you was Plex Media Server Logs_2020-02-27_07-48-21.zip so I took a quick look at them …

In Plex Media Server.1.log I can see lots of this …

clearly something is not right on your config. Could be anything really but I do wonder with the restores you done do the files have the right ownership and that you have not copied stuff as root.

You could try the following on your plexserver (adjust path and user for your setup) and see if it helps …

sudo chmod -R 755 /var/lib/plexmediaserver
sudo chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver

If not a new set of logs might be no harm attaching.

Could you try and disable the CineMaterial agent and see if that somewhat helps the situation.

Thanks for trying to help.

My location of plex is little bit different as i“m using plex on my synology so i tried
sudo chmod -R 755 /volume4/Plex/Library/

also i tried that with sudo chown -R plex:plex but this group is not existent on my synology. I have the user plex but itĀ“s assigned to group ā€œuserā€. So how should be the command then?

I also disabled cinematerial agent but all didn’t help.
What i also noticed by the way: generally the metadata update takes much longer than before the poster bug. Which of course could also be related to the many errors in the log.

Please find a new log attached. Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-11_13-40-58.zip (1.8 MB)

I believe the command would be …

sudo chown -R plex:user /volume4/Plex/Library

I’ll also take a look at your logs – let me see if I can find something else.

thanks. i did the command but it also didn“t seem to help.

… was the NAS rebooted recently ? If not might be worth a try. Give your router a restart for the fun of it also

ā€œdid you try turning it off and on again?ā€
Yeah i rebooted the NAS right before and now i also did a reboot for the router.
DidnĀ“t help. What is also strange: when i edit the affected movies i see a selection of posters in the poster section. So it downloads correctly. But if I choose another one he still doesn’t apply it to the movie.

That is very odd behaviour which I’ve not seen before. Maybe a thumbnail cached locally but fails to fetch actual poster ? I still see CineMaterial in your logs so maybe that poster is from there. I assume you deleted these …

plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Plug-in\ Support/Caches/*
plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Plug-in\ Support/Data/*

not plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Plug-in\ Support/Data*

failing that I’m really not sure so I guess we need someone from plex themselves to jump in. Sorry, I could not be more help but will continue to look at the logs when I have a free min.

Thanks for your help.
I stopped plex again, deleted the contents of the folders and started it again (while the cinematerial agent was disabled).
Unfortunately still no improvement.

Okay I actually think things are getting better. Looking in your latest Plex Media Server.1.log I am not seeing the errors from before. This log now looks good (at least to me)!

At this point could you optimize database and clean bundles via settings → manage > troubleshooting.

Then, take 1 movie which is causing you a problem and do a full plex dance with it.

Once its matched again after the dance try and set a poster.

Fingers and toes crossed here

I tried everything you told me but still no success.

What additionally annoys me now: because of all the playing around and re-reading of the metadata, a lot of movies with the wrong language in the plot summary are now reassigned. I would like to have this in German (and so it was with the majority of the movies) and now every second movie is with an English description.
I really had a great working plex server with a very well maintained library a few weeks ago and since 1 or 2 versions and all this playing around is chaos.

Nothing has been changed on the server except to install the Plex updates and I suspect there is a bug at least in the version for Synology systems.
