are those movies only missing the posters or are they lacking metadata in general?
could it be they’re not matched? In that case, updating metadata won’t do you any good as Plex has no reference where to search for it.
reasons for that could be poor naming of your files/folders.
would you mind sharing some example screenshots of the videos showing without poster and how they show up in your file system?
If you have mp4 files among your movies, I recommend you do this before trying further:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
hmm… file name looks ok and is in line with The Movie Database (I suppose you’re using The Movie Database as agent?). It also appears that Plex properly scanned the title and year (that’s why it shows right in the poster wall – except for the missing poster). However you can see it didn’t match the movie as the rest of the metadata is empty (resulting e.g. in the “originally available” at 1900).
both files in 1 folder also called Howl's Moving Castle (2004)?
can you re-scan the library to see if Plex picks it up then (not updating the metadata).
if that doesn’t work right away… alternatively match them manually via the movie’s context menu (... > Match / Fix-Match).
Hi, jumping in here as I have the exact same symptoms. Have a new server where I reinstalled plex from scratch. Some TV show’s have the posters others don’t.
I have metadata like summary and stuff just not the posters. I am about to uninstall and reinstall again.
Here is an example :
If i go to search options, change the Agent to plex movie and let it find the movie… then it downloads the metadata and works… mostly… still a few that don’t come up…

I would do as Tom said, Fix Match available from the Title ellipsis (…) and refresh metadata but remove that date from" originally available" first. If that fails you have no choice but the Plex Dance on titles failing to creating art. Once that is complete from the left hand side of the web client next to Libraries there is another ellipsis, use Optimize Database.
