So far it’s been pretty positive. As I am sure everyone is aware, finding the right device is a bit of a pain… and built around one’s individual needs. I wanted one that will Direct Play 4K movies on my Projector and 4K TV without buffering and have 7.1 passthrough.
The Roku 4 worked pretty good but that thing would heat up like it was going to catch fire (at which point it would stop responding to IR commands). but it also lacked 7.1 passthrough.
I decided on a NUC because I wanted it to be able to other things when needed.
Windows 10 was my platform of choice. PMP plays well with everything except the 4K which currently stutters heavily. Thanks to @vlang for pointing out that PMP has an option in its settings (under video) to using Hardware Decoding. which fixed the stuttering.
As @“Ach!lles” pointed out, HD Audio is currently not being passed through. but I can hope that will eventually be fixed.
The Harmony Elite Remote was a bit of a stickler to get Working. I had to add it as a NUC5CPYH to get the IR signals to work and it PMP thinks it’s a keyboard.
On Windows, fullscreen seems to be hit or miss, even adding the --fullscreen to the launch command, but I mapped the “Media Record” button on the Remote to toggle fullscreen in the json. which works for me.
Red/Green/Blue/ Yellow don’t work but @vlang said he’d look at that.
So, over all. good experience. Will update as time passes.
As i pointed out above, it’s on a Windows 10 Pro (which I like to use for other things not just plex) but plex is set to startup with the NUC.
I got the Harmony Elite Remote working perfectly. The Trick was mapping Numbers to the Red, Yellow, Green, Blue buttons. Which i had to call support to do, apparently, you can have the numbers on the touch screen but not the real buttons… support can add them to the the real buttons.
So now,
Red = 1 = Full Screen,
Green = 2 = Cycle Subs,
Yellow= 3 = Cycle Audio,
blue = 4 = Home.
everytime i turn it on, plex is not full screen despite the “–fullscreen” added to the icon. but pressing the red button fixes that. The IR works great as long as I don’t allow the NUC to sleep (change it in harmony to never turn off, and set windows to never sleep)
PMP is set to use hardware transcode if needed and it works pretty great. except if you jump ahead, at times the audio gets out of sync.
I have been thinking about getting exactly the same as you have, Thanks for the heads up!
I read somewhere else that there was a firmware update for the nuc to fix audio pass-through, have you got your audio working ?

Only in Windows and its still rocky you can follow the thread here.
But it works great if you use the amazon adaptor instead of the HDMI.
but the Embedded version of Plex is a bit rocky too… currently I am testing the Nightly and it works okay (with the adaptor, have not tested with just HDMI yet) but there are DTS MA issues. I would prefer to use the embedded version (the Harmony remote works better, no need for an OS, etc) but until they iron out some of the issues, stuck with windows.
Hi, just to share my own experience, i got my new NUC7i3 last week and have spent the week-end installing it, doing tests, etc.
My setup:
8GB ram, 256 GB SDD (accessing PMS from a Synology NAS)
Windows 10 home edition
Auto login with PMP started automatically
HDMI connection to an Anthem Statement D2V 3D receiver/processor
PMP configured for Audio Passthrough and hardware decoding for video
All latest intel drivers
Harmony 650
Intel remote keyboard (iOS App)
Overall, the experience as a whole is great, with only 2 minor problems:
I experienced some audio drops (milliseconds) while watching movies with HD audio format (DTA MA).
The remote control experience is average. If i start the Nuc directly (device mode) with the harmony, it works fine. However, when i start all devices using the “play a movie” activity, the remote control doesn’t work on anything and i can’t control PMP.
This is an extremely helpful thread! I’m trying to build a similar setup. For your win10 NUC, which PMP client are you running? The official Plex Win10 app, chrome, or some other browser?
