Hi. I have Plex Media Server installed on my Nvidia Shield—the one with 16 Gb of internal storage. I have a NAS connected to my home network. When I go to Plex, Settings, Plex Media Server, Storage location, Modify Storage Location, Let’s do it!, PMS data storage location, it gives me 2 options: Internal (system storage location) and Internal (user accessible storage location). I don’t see external or adopted or my NAS or my home network name. I don’t know what the correct selection is because they’re both “internal”.
How can I keep the Plex media server on my Nvidia and store media (such as live recorded tv shows—I have Plex Pass) to the NAS? Thank you.
You cannot put the Plex storage to the NAS, that is not supported. What you can do is attach an USB storage (stick, HDD) and either use it as external or adopted storage. This can than be used to move the Plex storage to.
Btw. this only applies to meta-data, settings and so on. To use your NAS as media ressource, you can mount it via smb in the storage settings of the shield. The NAS will than be accessible by PMS via a path /storage/name-of-the-nas-mount
If you scroll down, there’s a section that begins “Connecting to a Network Location (SMB)”. It seems to indicate that I can store files on my NAS from the Nvidia. SMB is enabled on my NAS.
The location where PMS stores its data (meta data, the db etc.) can be moved to an external storage like USB or SD (not available for the 16 GB Shield).
Your media files (movies, tv shows, music) can be stored either on a) a USB stick/USB HDD, b) SD (if available) or c) on your network e.g. a NAS. This has to be mounted like described in your article. You then have to point your PMS to “use” the respective paths for the respective libraries.
So no, you cannot move the PMS data (point 1.) to your NAS.
But yes, you can access and use all your media (point 2) with PMS running on your Shield.
