Nvidia Shield 2015 crashing on Plex app 10.28.0.3441, need downgrade to 10.26.0.2578

Posting this to save someone else the trouble. I have three Nvidia Shields, (1) 2015 Pro and (2) 2019 Pro. The 2015 Pro model (OS 9.2.1 (33.2.0.326))started crashing and was finally to the point were it was just stuck on the Android boot screen and would not load.

I found the directions to factor reset on Nvidia’s website;
SHIELD Pro(2015 & 2017) or SHIELD TV (2015)
Nvidia Factory Reset

  1. Turn off your SHIELD.
  2. Unplug the power cable from your SHIELD.
  3. Connect your SHIELD to your PC/Mac/Linux computer via USB using SHIELD’s micro USB port.
  4. Plug the power cable back into your SHIELD.
  5. Wait 2 seconds, and then hold the NVIDIA power button on SHIELD for 5-6s until you see the fastboot menu on the display.
  6. Tap on NVIDIA button to move on Menu to “Boot recovery kernel”.
  7. Hold NVIDIA button to for 2-4s to select “Boot Recovery Kernel”.
  8. You may see the dead Android robot on screen. This is expected behavior.
  9. Hold NVIDIA button to for 2-4s to process to next menu. If you don’t see the Recovery menu, try this step a few times.
  10. You will see Android Recovery Menu.
  11. Tap on NVIDIA button to move to “wipe data/factory reset”.
  12. Hold NVIDIA button to for 4-6s to select “wipe data/factory reset”.
  13. After process select “reboot system now”.
  14. SHIELD will boot to home screen.

This process took about 2hrs don’t interrupt it!

Once that was done the Shield booted up with an old interface and plex client as 8.25.1. I was able to link my account an access the Plex library on my NAS and watch movies without issue. Rebooted the Shield and updated the Plex app from the play store (rev 10.28.0.3441) now when trying to access the plex client it would crash / freeze. Uninstalled the update and it would work.

Decided to downgrade the Plex client app back to 10.26.0.2578. The apk is listed here on the plex fourm
10.26.0.2578-6cc7ea1a.apk

I put this on a thumb drive and connected it to the Shield. Installed the X-plore File Manager from the Play Store and then navigated to usb and installed the apk.

I now have Plex 10.26.0.2578 load and everything it woking normal.

My two Nvidia Shield 2019 have not had any issue with the update.

Before figuring out it was just the Plex app causing the issue I had cleaned out the dust from the unit and re-thermal pasted the CPU. I also re-imaged the 500gb hard drive to an SSD. Like I said, I hope this post save someone else the pain.

  • Just removed the updates from the Plex app and then load the APK for rev 10.26.0.2578.

Plex Developers. You have an issue with the 10.28.0.3441 version on the Nvidia Shield 2015 OS 9.2.1 (33.2.0.326)!!!

Shield HW version on Wikipedia

I have the 2015 Pro running 10.28 and it’s not crashing.

I have a Shield (Unknown year), on 3441, no crashing. I don’t know how to find what year I got, so I might not be able to confirm an issue here…

If it helps, I checked on my Android OS, and it is still on 9.1.1. So maybe look into if it might be OS related.

Your Shield is not on the current OS 9.2.1 (33.2.0.326). Updated the OP to show Shield OS version.

Model no. P2897. Shield non-Pro 2017. Seems identical to the Pro other than no HDD however.
