Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

Yeah thanks for that.

I personally don’t have sync issues with it. Just a frozen frame and no audio from where I scrub from but an active timer. It’s bizarre that different users see different issues.

I appreciate you trying. It’s my last issue at the moment and even for me it’s not always reproducible.

That sucks, I will try more files tomorrow. But I did test it with three recently added movies I had issues with. It’s now gone.

Yeah it’s cool. I was contacted today outside of these forums to help debug the issue.

So any feedback is great (and appreciated)

Thanks so much for the replies and advice. That made much more sense with regards which files to be using to resolve the issue.

I’ve installed 9.1.0.31883-c5303 (arm64v8a) from your beta page and it works a treat on the 4k TrueHD playback.

I’ve kept a copy of all my files should I need them.

Have noticed even on the beta (9.1.0.31834)

1- Most of the time I have to press play, watch the spinner a sec, then back out and hit play again to get it to actually start. Seems to again be mostly with True HD titles, but has happened on others. If I don’t back out and just let it sit on the spinner I sometimes get something like “you do not have anough power to convert” kind of error, which makes no sense as the dashboard says nothing is even playing and even if it were transcoding, my 8 core Nas can and has done it fine.

2- If I pause a movie and the Screensaver (shield) comes on, when I try to resume, I get an “error: unable to play media” clicking ok takes me to the movie page, then pressing play started it fine.

Edit: Just discovered this does not happen if I turn off refresh rate switching.

3- I’ve always experienced a delay in the audio getting going when I start a movie, but since all this, is it just me or is that pause in the audio longer now. Like 5-6 seconds of video play before the sound comes through. Used to be only a sec or 2.

Anyways, just logging what I have experienced.

What can any of us without Plex Pass do to fix this? I am not asking for new features, I am asking for something that was working and was broken without proper testing in a mainstream update. Development 101… is there no QA on hiring nowadays?

having plex pass has nothing to do with it. plex pass doesn’t give you a higher level of support.

Plex Pass only gives you access to server betas. The client betas are available to anyone. Alternatively, you can roll back to the last known working stable version, 8.30.

Yeah I reformatted the shield as nothing else seemed to want to fix it. Plex does seem to be working now although another DV file wasn’t working similar to my last issue so I had to regrab the file again which again for some reason seems to have fixed that issue.

I’m on the beta and still having the issue where if I skip too far forward on a video too quickly the audio and video stop playing but the play counter is still going forward.

I presume others are also having this issue?

I can replicate this issue quite easily with different files, some are DV 4k files and I just managed to do it with a standard 1080p one.

It seems like srubbing too fast does it for me. Like if I skip 30 seconds forward and then immediately skip another 3 mins and quickly keep doing skips it breaks and I have the frozen frame with no audio but timer going up still.

I checked on Tautulli and it shows that it’s still playing although the timer at the bottom is running much faster than it should be and it’s skipping back and forward on that.

Time wise on my shield it seems to just be moving normally.

But yeah I can replicate this pretty easy. I can minimize Plex and go back in and it still does the same although the screen is then black. The only way to fix is to back out of the file and then resume it from what I can tell.

I’m on:
Plex 9.1.0.31883
Pms; 1.25.9.5721
Shield; 9.0.1 (33.1.0.283) (haven’t installed the hot fixes yet)

Found the 9.1 APK elsewhere. Seems to have made 4K HDR content with TrueHD work without stuttering for now.

May I ask? Are you using cloud storage or local?

Plex server on local network

I have tried the beta as I mentioned previously on my post and most of the times it’s ok but in fact it’s not fully fixed. Every now and then and while just watching it just start the spinning and I see that the stream of data fully stops being received. So I went back to v8.31.2.31546 (last stable version before 9.x) and there so far no issues at all.

I have no issues with 4K Dolby TrueHD/Atmos files, but have issues with 4K HDR DTS-HD MA (7.1 and DTS-X) files with my 2019 Shield on 9.1.0.31883 beta.

But, I will note that this beta fixed the stuttering/buffering TrueHD/Atmos issues.

Thanks for this.
It was suggested elsewhere that the fact that media is in the cloud could be the cause. But clearly not.

This is the first report that I have seen of any problems with DTS audio. What are you observing?

The issue I have is what it used to be like with 4K TrueHD/Atmos files.

It’s weird, TrueHD/Atmos now works flawlessly, but 4K HDR DTS-HD MA (7.1 and DTS-X) now stutter and freeze the Shield. I see a lot of the orange spinning circle and video trying to ‘catch up’ to the audio. Then audio drops out and the Shield becomes non-responsive. DTS-HD MA 5.1 works perfect.

I should note, all 1080p DTS-HD MA files perform as expected.

So far, side loading the beta to my 2019 Shield Pro fixed the playback issues.
Edit: no, beta is still faulty. Atmos files now start fine but stop playing a few minutes in. Same with DTS files. Only after I go back to the main menu will the movie resume.
I reverted to 8.30 and so far no issue.
Plex, fix your $hiit.

I’ve got the same issue with my 2019 Shield Pro.

Post last update, SOME TrueHD movies are working (Just tested Batman Returns, Baby Driver- fine) but most others won’t work at all (I tried at least half a dozen Marvel movies that previously played no problem). I just get the buffering icon and sometimes if I try to exit, the whole thing just crashes.

If I change the audio track to AC3, plays straight away…

Plex, pls fix…
