Nvidia Shield Dolby TrueHD playback is borked

I have searched for an entire day. How do you upgrade your shield to 9.1.0? Mine says it’s up to date at 9.0.5.

Sideloaded the new (todays) beta from here:

Plex Client 9.1.0.31948-beta
Nvidia shield 9.0.2(33.1.0.319) (PRO)
PMS 1.26.0.5715

So far results on Last Night in Soho are good (no studdering or bandwidth data graph dropping to nothing in the first 15 min via dashboard). I’ll keep the server going and check again after the weekend to see if it’s something that shows up without a fresh rebooted virgin server.

Godfather III: Coda still won’t play, but now I can navigate to 0:30 seconds and it will start playing from there. Something is causing the TrueHD 5.1 track to fail, and then the bandwidth just goes to zero as the player time counts up on dashboard, but not on the player.

A friend just ripped this (separately) as well, so I tried direct playing it from his server and same issue. Funny enough I & II play just fine.

Seems to be working for me, and allowed me to get the audio to start in Godfather III Coda via seeking.

Can you say what explicitly you saw with the freezing issue previously.

I’m fairly sure there were two issues involving freezing….with slightly different symptoms.

I’m still seeing this problem on the new beta. In limited testing, it appears to happen only on videos with AAC audio. I haven’t been able to duplicate the problem on videos with AC3 audio.

FWIW, pressing the ‘left’ or ‘right’ buttons (rewind 10 sec/forward 30 sec) cause the video to start playing correctly.

That’s interesting so thanks.
I saw the release notes and honestly didn’t pay much attention to the file I tested with after the update.

Will do some more testing with different codecs in the morning.
(Previously I saw the issue on anything from a 4K remux down to a 700mb avi)

Are you remuxing audio from your discs then? What BD/UHD has AAC audio on it?

Seeing exactly the same behavior as you with Coda.

I’m testing with material that was remuxed using AAC audio to validate functionality.

I will also do more testing with 4k material (and TrueHD or DTS MA audio), as well as avi material (presumably with mp3 audio).

Hi !
I don’t know if it was an issue before, but I can’t direct play .ass subtitles.
I have to set “burn only image format” for it to work, but doing so will, of course, prevent .pgs from direct playing.

Does anyone have the same behaviour ?

@TYRANTII
I just tested out my 4K copy of the Godfather III.

On first try it thought long and hard about playing then finally did.
On the second try it simply refused to play until (as you mentioned) I did the 30 seconds skip forward.

I just did a whole host of testing on various files.

Mkv with AAC, all HD Audio variants (both 1080p and 4K) and everything still freezes.

Initially the one film that didn’t seem to freeze was Ghost 4K which has AC3 audio.

Sure enough ten minutes later I went back and tested that movie again and it did start freezing.

Also unfortunately for me neither ff30 nor rewind10 made the video resume.

quite perplexing that a client version that previously played everything pretty much fine has now turned into a client that struggles to play almost everything.

it’s almost as if plex don’t care enough about those that want to play their own content any more, and are more interested in added “features” that no-one really asked for.

This is a long-standing problem. Apparently lack of support in exoplayer.

Please don’t muddy this thread with conjecture. I feel like we have the attention of the devs and they are trying to find solutions. We can help by continuing to report what works and what doesn’t.

the first paragraph of my post is not conjecture, it is fact.
the second paragraph is opinion, not conjecture (the 2 are quite different), and as such feel it’s a valid opinion to express.

the thread is already muddy as it is, as it’s no longer just about TrueHD not working, it’s grown much more with the “fix” breaking other things along the way.

Just noticed there’s another beta with “further” improvements for seeking.

Will test shortly.

If I signed up for the beta program and downloaded through the playstore (shield) would I need to go on to the playstore to update to the latest beta or does it auto update do you know?

And fyi I was having the same seeking freeze frame issue as you.
