think 8.29.x is the last “known good” release.
but if 8.30.2 works all good for you then stick to that one.
Initially, much further up thread, 8.30 was identified as the version to roll back to.
maybe so, but others have said 8.29.x
so, as i said, if 8.30.2 works then stick to that, otherwise go back to 8.29.x
Well, I admit I did not read the whole thread, I only did a search. The thread is huge. I tend only to look at recent posts. I remember reading this thread on and off. For the last couples weeks or so I remember someone asking why there are changes in areas that already work. I remember reading VLC does not work, which is a different client than SHIELD, suggesting the problem is the server. I have looked at the Dashboard and before it shows any indication it is playing something for a client, it stops. (So different installations do different things.) I have also had a good number of cases where the server just stops for reasons unknown. If I hover over the System Tray icon, the icon just goes away. I then restart the server. NONE of this happened before. And what used to be called “Live TV & DVR” is now relegated to the Plex area and called “Live TV,” and it no longer works: nothing records, even after my re-SCAN. This TV Tuner feature had problems originally, but over time it started working reliably. But now the current server + the current client = no longer works. My next attempt to get it to work is to remove my configured recordings and re-add them. Thankfully I have reliable DVRs using other tech. On the bright side, music lyrics are working again. They used to work, and then stopped on and off. Now they’re working again.
OK, so the problem is in the client. (Just say.) I will look for posts that explain how to roll back a client. I will search on the words “roll” and then “back” if “roll” doesn’t work. I am not going to read the whole thread. … I DID THE SEARCH. (It didn’t show any of my posts!?) I did not see how to roll back a client. If there is a post here that says what version to “roll back” to and how to do that, I will try it and report back here as to whether it fixed the TrueHD problem. Thanks.
it ain’t rocket science.
download the required older version of the client.
un-install the client from your device
manually install the downloaded version.
configure the client settings to suit
turn off auto-updates on the device.
if you have issues on your server then it’s not related to anything being discussed in this thread.
This is the way
Cool.
So far so good with 8.30, TrueHD working, and “support for clicking actors on details pages”
best to give the full version when advising one that works
is it 8.30.0.30944 ?
or 80.30.1.x or 80.30.2.xx
8.30.2.31202
was the version advised by @Achilles
- where do I find the older client?
- to where do I download it?
- I know how to UNINSTALL an app, unless it came with the box, in which case all it will let me do is UNINSTALL UPDATES; I seem to recall NVIDIA SHIELD comes with both a server and a client; I use only the client
- if it were Windows, I would double-click a .MSI file or something; on Android, it used to be called a .APK file; if I download one of those, I may be able to launch it after muddling through some stuff
- I take it my client settings are forgotten during the “deinstall” process
- auto-updates have been OFF since day one
I cannot help but point out:
-
if Android gave us a way to “undo” an app update, this would be a lot simple; however, even System Restore on Windows does not work well 100% of the time, so “undo” in Android may be difficult, especially since it might affect “user files” on the client device; I know “rolling back” the Plex server does not work well on Windows (I learned that the hard way)
-
if the regressions were not put into Plex in the first place, we wouldn’t be having this discussion; there are also chronic bugs (e.g., even though my server is reachable from the Internet 100% of the time, it doesn’t say so; when I use ExportTools, in that process, for some reason, a green check mark appears on “reachable”; after a while it goes away again; in the current, “apparently broken” client, it doesn’t open to HOME reasonably anymore, and it takes like 4+ clicks to close Plex and the focus bounces around the screen; it just worked reasonably in old versions)
-
I think it will be easier to wait for a fix than to try to reinstall an older version of the client; once I get a server-client setup that works semi-reliably, I am definitely going back to freezing updates on both devices; I just hope it doesn’t take more than a year like with the CHAPTERS regression
-
if it sounds like I am bitter, it’s because I have been programming for over 40 years, and I have never seen S/W that has one guaranteed feature that Plex has: a regression will show up; and as someone else pointed out, why keep adding features nobody wants? for example, the reason the new client doesn’t just go to HOME properly anymore is probably due to the useless feature that tries to make Plex the center hub of your home entertainment [adding that broke something else – typical]; and don’t even get me started on hubs and changing background colors; who thinks of this stuff?
Where do I find this?
How do I do this?
you will find older APK’s here: Plex for Android - #416 by marekszulik
it is dead simple to get the file on the shield and install it, just Google it
if auto-updates have been off then why have you ended up with a newer client version installed that has issues?
in which case you should have plenty knowledge to be able to do what is required.
documented several times in this thread
Well, you see, Herman – can I call you Herman? – I mentioned (if you had bothered to read the thread) that I froze my installation of the server and the client, but only recently updated them to be in sync with my neighbor, who I finally convinced to give Plex a try.
I’ve been pondering this thread, etc. Let me say something. With what’s going on in the world today (Ukraine, COVID, global warming, supply-chain issues, etc.) I can honestly say I sometimes openly weep when I watch the news and see mankinds’s inhumanity to each other and to Gaia. I am glad to say I have not turned to alcohol or drugs to cope. But I DO turn to PLEX sometimes to simply immerse myself into a fantasy where I don’t have to think about all the stressful things going on ONLY TO FIND that SIMPLE, BASIC functionality NO LONGER WORKS because of the poor project management at PLEX. I will be the first to point out I have TRIED OTHER SYSTEMS and found them lacking. PLEX is the best I have found so far – when it works.
Thank you to HAZ3E who gave me the link to find the older clients. I shall browse. If I decide to attempt the downgrade, I will report back here.
P.S. Herman, yes, 40 years as systems analyst, systems programmer, applications programmer, database admin, MS-Office with competence in many languages (some object-oriented) including VBA, PL/SQL, Perl, C, C++, Pascal, etc., etc., etc. I even mastered the Petzold Windows 3.1 book. (I even know how talented the programmers at Borland were/are.) However, NEVER did I have to learn how to decode a video, never mind stream one from a file. Ditto for just audio. Nor did I ever need to establish business relationships so I could automatically download details on movies, etc., etc., etc. I paid Plex to do this for me. I have a lifetime Plex Pass. I still sing Plex’s praises, but they have to do a better job with regressions. As someone pointed out, what were they doing in the TrueHD code in the first place? And why isn’t my TV Tuner working anymore? ARGH!
that’s got nothing to do with this thread and the issues being discussed in the this.
you should start a new thread about that particular issue - but is almost certainly not linked to these issues.
the rest of your post isn’t worth the time reading.
That’s not particularly helpful @herman_munster …
I will wait for a fix and stop posting here.
