You can download the apk installer to anywhere you choose… A PC, a NAS, a USB stick.

Once you have uninstalled the Plex Client ONLY, you might need to install a 3rd party file browser in order to be able to browse your network / USB stick / PC for the apk file you downloaded.

I use this… https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore&hl=en_GB&gl=US

Once you browse your downloaded apk file, just run it to install the older Plex client.

Once installed, you will indeed need to go through the usual client setup processes which would have been deleted when you uninstalled it.

Are you sure you aren’t a Plex, inc employee with how helpful you are?

For those who don’t know how to side-load APKs… Just Google ā€˜Easy Fire Tools’ (smart phone/tablet app) and read up/watch a video on how to use it. You will be amazed how easy it is to SL any APK once you’ve set this app up properly. If you have s stupid phone, you’ll have to use the methods posted earlier. I believe you also have to enable Developer mode on your Shield and enable network debugging (?). Someone can correct me if I’m wrong though.

To rollback, or uninstall the current problematic version and install to a previously better working version is how it fixes the problem. Just go to any site that keeps versions of Android software like apkmirror to get a version to sideload. Before using the current 9.1 beta I went back to 8.31 but others are suggesting 8.29. I’m having no issues with the current beta so as far as I am concerned the crisis is over.

Super helpful thread - Thanks everyone! X-Plore File Manager worked great and 8.29 is fast and flawless. I downgraded all 6 devices to 8.29 where I plan to stay for the next 10 years or so…

not sure why you are replying to me.
but no need to use any third party sites for the APKs, they are all available from there (both public and beta)

Does 8.29 support Dolby Vision playback?

Just came across this thread so apologies if this has already been asked.

Dolby Vision was supported long before 8.29.x ever saw the light of day

Thanks for confirming. I never took note of when DV began working for me.

I only remember seeing it kick on this year around the time the SHIELD upgrade came out which was incredibly odd.

I’ll add feedback to this thread if it helps. I currently have the latest BETA and it’s beginning to act, well like a BETA

Finally.
With today’s latest 9.1.0.32117-beta (and third to offer a supposed fix for frozen audio/video and still active timer)I can no longer reproduce the issue having tested on a dozen or so different files repeatedly…

Third time’s a charm…or at least I hope so.

yeah but what else has it broken in the process? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

does it still have all the UI bugs/issues that appeared around 9.0.x ?

Heading off to work now and I tested the only issue I was still having.

If you wanna elaborate on the UI bugs I’m happy to take a look in the morning when I get home.

I have a mac and iPhone only…am i still able to do the side loading onto the shield? I don’t see how i can do the easy fire tools thing?

Hi @sellmystuffonline81_yahoo_com … I’m no Mac expert, however you should be able to copy the downloaded APK onto a USB stick, plug the USB stick into the Shield, and then on the Shield, use X-Plore to browse the USB stick.

Assuming you have a Shield Pro with USB ports:

  • download APK to your Mac
  • copy it to a USB stick
  • put USB stick in Shield
  • open USB stick in file management tool of choice
  • install APK

Thanks guys. I’m gonna try that.

I uninstalled the old client first but I notice that after I uninstalled it there is no way to turn off auto updates…

I’m guessing the kepler ARM 64 is the one I want right?

Yeah, same here with my testing.

What UI bugs? Is there a thread addressing the issue?

Sorry about that was meant for the person that was asking how to find files. Please forgive.
