Stumbled on a strange issue that I think I’ve been experiencing for a while but I’m not completely sure. Was trying to watch a UK based show that is 25fps and the shield just kept doing like a buffering of death except for once in a random attempt it would play. File plays fine on iphone, ipad, aptv and is in a .mkv container.
Ended up doing a complete wipe and reset up of the shield pro to no change. Then I noticed that if I returned the refresh rate switching off the files played fine every single time. Found that to be strange so started testing more content.
I found a number of files, with no seemingly rhyme or reason behind it, that were all 24fps content where the shield, with the refresh rate switching on, was changing my output from 23.xhz to 60hz to play them back. A bunch would stay at 24hz. I was using the get info on the server to verify the frame rate for the files.
I have no idea how long this has been going on for, but I would suspect a long while. My tv doesn’t notify me to what it’s switched to, so I have to manually hit a button on the remote 5 times to bring up a box to check. I found the shield under the settings will show what it was switched to.
The good news is, 99% of the content I watch is 24fps so turning off the refresh rate matching in the plex app will fix all of the movies it decides to switch me to 60hz (and whatever it’s doing to the video, 3:2 pulldown or who knows what, I had noticed some videos had motion issues and now it explains why.) The other good news is the shows in 25fps I watch are just panel shows mostly or mild game shows and so having frames lost /stutters that could be induced don’t really matter.
The server shows it’s direct playing and all things normal and this doesn’t happen with the files when played back on an APTV. My TV reports the correct setting for all 24fps content and the 25fps content every single time when using the APTV.
So far as I can tell this is an issue with Plex and the Shield Pro. Shield is also up to date.
