Nvidia SHIELD 2017 model
I have several Anamorphic 16:9 DVD rips that I have been watching fine until now with the new plex player enabled. However tonight Nvidia SHIELD update 8.2 was released and I have updated one of my SHIELDs to find that now it is letterboxing all anamorphic 16:9 format videos. Nothing I change restores the correct aspect on the SHIELD.
Switching to the older player restores the correct aspect (although now I lose skipping of intros) and other clients such as my PC and Android phone are still showing the correct aspect. My other SHIELD that has not been updated to 8,2 is also displaying the correct aspect so this is not a media issue. It is clearly a bug introduced since updating the SHIELD to update 8.2.
Hoping this can be corrected relatively quickly as I like the new style player and intro skipping but for now on this SHIELD I am having to revert back to the older player to watch this content.
Can you share the XML info and/or samples for these? Partly because I’m curious, partly because I’m sure they’ll need it to investigate. Hard to argue when it works on the other devices. And did before.
Basically every DVD is “anamorphic”. They’re all encoded with the same number of pixels, and then they’re either stretched (16:9) or squished (4:3). It’s a bizarre format.
I tried Original and Letterbox. Made no difference. Under Playback Info, Quality is 636x480. In Shield Display and Sound, the resolution is set to 720x480@60.
If anyone is interested, it’s Star Trek Voyager that is having the issue.

I’m on shield tube, upgraded to Shield Xperience 8.2 today. After, my 480p/i DVD mkv files are also being stretched/squeezed and display in incorrect aspect ratio. When I disable resolution switching, having shield tube upconvert, the aspect ratio is back to normal.
“If you turn it off, SHIELD will be left to do the upscaling vs the TV doing the upscaling. If it’s a 4k TV, there is 0 impact to the 4k content you play. The 1080p content will be scaled by SHIELD. If you have a 2019 SHIELD, the scaling should match or beat your TV, if you have an earlier SHILED, the scaling may not be as good as your TV.”
Haha, that’s what I said :). It doesn’t hurt to try the different settings and see which you prefer. at least until Plex fixes the issue.
I’m running a Sony A8H OLED, which has a good upscaler, and the shield scaling is doing pretty darn good so far. I’m actually kindof impressed at how some of my 480 content is right now.
Having similar issues with one of my Nvidia Shields, but not the other (both are the 2017 non-pro models running 8.2).
Cannot get the one to work at all with turning on or off resolution switching, frame rate switching. Neither the old player or the new player works properly.
However, if I uninstall updates and go back to Plex version 5.6.1.505 (the pre-loaded version), everything works just fine, and as soon as I update to the latest version it stops working.
Funnily enough when I turned off resolution switching and tried to play some really old 4:3 content I ended up with a postage stamp sized video in the middle of the screen.
