nVidia Shield "Your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video"

Still regularly happening here too. I’ll be looking to ditch the shield here soon.

did you install the 7.2.3+ test image from nvidia? it would be silly to ditch it before installing this and seeing if it resolves the issue first

I signed up for the best image after reading. I usually just pop in every month or two to see if it’s made any progress.

What’s this?

Thanks for the link.

Has anyone experienced any hiccups with the shield experience 8.0 since it dropped…I’ve not really watched anything really but I have tried like 10mins and I haven’t gotten an error network message. So I’m wondering what your guys thoughts are on this did it fix it or is it still the same

Yesterday I was able to watch an episode of 55 minutes right to the end without problems. Seems basic, but I was pleased
I might even come over again from the green competitor if Plex is running smoothly again on the Shield.

I am still getting network error in the new 8.0. Will it help deleting and reinstalling the Plex app I wonder?

I am so frustrated with Plex and the Nvidia Shield. I have the Shield since they first announced that Plex was available on it. Back then, it was perfect. Somewhere along the way, some movies would say that the network connection was no fast enough and I would have to then change the quality settings in the Shield app to convert automatically. Like many of you, I have ruled out my local network as the issue.

First, my Apple TV 4 has no issues playing any of the movies. Why do I not just use that you ask; I hate the remote and app interface. Second, I have also loaded the Kodi app with the Plex add-on to the Shield and it seems to work fine as well. I have only done this recently so I do not have much time with it, but a movie that always gives me trouble on the Plex app for the Shield gives me no issues on the Kodi app. This leads me to believe that there is something in the app not the Shield causing this problem. The only issue is again, I do not like the interface.

I am running the latest Plex Media Server (1.16.4.1469) for Windows on a Windows 10 Pro (with latest updates) box (Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz 32 GB RAM 4 Seagate Exos 10TB SATA 6GB/s drives in a software RAID0 array). My “server” is pretty much sleeping all the time especially since I am mostly trying to use direct stream and direct play. I do not want to transcode anything inside my network (which all IPTV boxes are wired). The only time I have to transcode is when the app won’t take the direct play stream.

I am at a loss as to why this has not been addressed. This has to be a Plex for Shield app issue since I do not have the same problem on anything else. What do we have to do to get Plex to address this?!? :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I continue to have this problem on both of our Shields. Everything involved has been updated to the latest and greatest. :disappointed:

are you sure its not transcoding the video when this happens? (aka the subtitle issue with transcoded audio issue where it forces it to transcode the video to keep it in sync)

you should post your logs anyway after you get the message…

It very well may be transcoding - almost certainly is, because I need the closed captions - but the server can handle that. I have literally never, not even once, had this issue in all the years of my Rokus. It’s only happened in the past year or so that I’ve been using the Shields side by side with the Rokus that they were supposed to replace.

The issue is nothing to do with transcoding.
It’s now close to 18 months of this issue first appearing despite all the logs provided in that time.

That said with the Shield Experience 8 upgrade and some coincidental advice to set my clients with static IP’s, it’s only happening once in the last few days. As opposed to 3-4 times per 50 minute episode.

i have 3 SHIELDS for the last 2 months or so now, instantly put 7.2.3+ as soon as i got them as i know the nvidia firmware was buggy and could cause this issue. running 8.0.0 now which is a ■■■■ show, but for other reasons

i do not have static ip’s set on any of the SHIELDS.

and only seen this error once in total, and the time i did see it, it was transcoding the video on a 4K REMUX. the cpu could not keep up in the PMS server

i have also seen it once time on my andoid mobile, when i had just switched it to transcoding, it lasted for a moment then was gone

transcoding could be related, perhaps i never have this problem because my shields are almost never transcoding the video.

why not post from fresh logs immediatly after the issue?
or can you upload a sample video that you see this error on 100% of the time? i will happy try it out on my SHIELDS and see if i can repeat and post the logs.

@brossow - isnt your PMS on your 918? i have 3x 918 and they are a great NAS, but realistically the CPU is old weaksauce and definaitly not up to some transcoding jobs, even with hardware transcoding

Yes, and it transcodes when necessary just fine … on my Rokus. Even most of the time on my Shields, but they frequently (at least once every day or two) have this error whereas the Rokus literally never have. Same resolution, same TVs, etc. And it often happens most of the way through a video, so it’s not like the server is suddenly choking on a new file, not is anything else happening in the server that would be interfering. Source files are 1080p max, target resolution the same (no 4K here). Only difference is the player. :man_shrugging:

are your SHIELDS using ethernet or WIFI? what about your ROKUs?

repeat the problem then immediatly post your logs here after it occurs

You seem really fixed on transcoding so let me try once more.
I never transcode. I’m fairly sure I know the difference between a 4K HDR remux that is transcoding or direct playing.
Plex says its direct playing, Tautulli says its direct playing but you feel its probably transcoding and that’s what causes the issue.
When the issue hits it doesn’t matter if it’s a 65GB Remux at 92Mbps average or a sub 1Mbps SD show.

Anyway as mentioned some combination of the static IP in the clients and Shield Experience 8 has minimized but not eradicated the issue.
In one of the other threads on this subject (yes at 170+ posts this is the tiny thread on the subject , the other 3 are all above 300 posts each ) one of the devs said the issue was indeed the Shield and the fix was in Experience 8.
I see an improvement but don’t believe for one second it was ever a Shield issue.

Or if it is I would love someone to explain why…

  1. It has never happened in Emby on The Shield.
  2. It has suddenly started on the ATV 4K in Plex over the last few weeks and far worse than it ever affected the Shield.

Props to you for chiming in to try and help though, it’s really appreciated.

im not fixed on trancoding by the cause at all, but simply dont dismiss any reason unless you can 100% rule it out, and everytime i have seen that, transcoding was a factor,

if you say plexpy reports everything is direct play and the issue occurs on that exact video where it reported its all directplay, you can rule out transcoding, something else is wrong

their was a problem with the SHIELD, the bug was in firmware 7.2.3. it affected all apps not just plex. nvidia fixed this in 7.2.3+ which you had to opt into. the same fix in 7.2.3+ is included in 8.0.0 nvidia confirmed this on their forums. it doesnt mean you dont have ANOTHER problem not at all related to this.

either way, you have 8.0.0 so you have that particliar fix from nvidia, so can safely rule that out

now you have the same issue on a completely different player from a SHIELD

at this point you have to widen your troubleshooting to include network issues / PMS server issues since you have the same problem on the apple tv, which shares nothing in common with the SHIELD

You may be missing my point.
Regardless of Shield version it has never happened in Emby on the same network.
It never happens in the native app on my LG with Plex on the same network.

Anyway the last couple of months have been a balancing act.

  1. Do I need Tautulli or do I need a stable Trakt more.
  2. Do I need a great UI (yes I really love UNO) or do I need a stable experience.
  3. Can I live with the god awful UX on the Shield in Plex (although the UI is now far improved thanks to UNO)

I came to the conclusion that Q1 & 2 is the latter and Q3 is definitely NO!
