Nvidia Tube Shield TV 2019 Non-Pro Stutters & Crashes on 4K UHD MKVs (nVidia officially blames Plex app)

No change for me after switching to the old player, If anything it crashed sooner after switching.

I’ve tried everything, I’m giving up, got a shield pro

I have been able to successfully playback 4K HDR remuxes with high bitrate on the Nvidia Shield Tube.

I had tried all of the tweeks (old player, faster SD card, kill background processes proactively, plexconnectkodi - which did work until the latest shield update).

I have had the Tube for just over a year, I don’t want to purchase a pro as I want to wait for a new device (whenever that will be) with an updated chipset, 4K UI etc etc.

I had to abandon trying to do it with Plex. Instead of the plex server I have a local network dnla/upnp share just for my 4k remuxes. I have gigabit ethernet through network. I then use Nova Video Player to playback the files. Mount the network share in the Nova app, enable audio passthrough like you would in Plex and playback. It plays everything I want to watch regardless of bit rate with no problems at all. (makes me wonder why the plex app can’t do it but clearly it’s super inefficient).

If someone could verify for me I would appreciate it. It’s the solution I’m sticking with until potentially Nvidia release a new device. At that stage I’ll get whatever is the top of the line version.

I tried it and surely works flawless! But no Dolby Vision support :frowning:

This is defiantly a Plex problem. I can play the exact same video on the exact same hardware with a different player. The Plex app on the Shield is the only thing that has this issue. Everything else works flawlessly.

I don’t if you guys are working on this or not but it seems to be getting worse with every release. I’ve had my Shield for almost a year now and I’ve had some videos that worked just fine then, that no longer work with the current releases. I’ve done testing with other apps and all these video’s play just fine on the same hardware.

I’ve been with plex for a very long time and a plex pass member for years, but you know if you guys can’t fix this issue soon I’m going to have to start looking for another option.

At least give us some feed back on what is causing the issue and maybe some temporary work arounds.

Hi,

just bought two NVIDIA shield tube 2019. i have been with plex for a long time, never had any issues. i have been using xiaomi mi box before , now i decided to get the NVIDIA shield as it has better hardware than the mi box. i never had issue before, i could play 4K or 4K HDR content on the tubes via plex without any stutter or crash. suddenly after the new update from nvidia and plex, no longer can play 4K HDR contents. i can only play a few none HDR 4K contents. but all the other media under 4K/4KHDR works without any issue.

i have tried different settings , the same results. please fix the issue as i am slowly updating my library to 4K/4K HDR contents.

keep safe,

thank you

pluxology,

thanks for the reply. f**k, that really sucks. i hope they do and fix it. i will wait and see. :frowning:

pluxology,

i cant really return them. as i am currently living in the Seychelles. i bough them from the US. the amount that i have to pay to send them back it would the same as buying a pro. i will see if i can sell them here and get the pro. i am very disappointed with plex though. if they can fix it, just fix it. :frowning:

and nvidia does not seem to give a sh** as well.

keep safe,

pluxology,

ah ok. i havent tried kodi with plex on the tube yet. i did use it before on my previous mi box. then i just used the plex app straight after that. then plex needs to step up and fix the issue, funny thing is that it was working fine before the last two updates.

keep safe.

pluxology,

ok interesting, then its not like they will be fixing it, very sad. is there another android box with proper hardware that i can get apart the nvidia shield tv pro 2019 ? xiaomi released their mi box 4s pro, but not the global version yet.

keep safe,

pluxology,

also one feature that would be nice is to be able to play two subtitles at the same time, one on top and one at the bottom.

Sadly many of us have complained about this since the tube was introduced, over a year now. Once or twice one of the community managers has chimed in that they’re “looking into it” but theres been no real action in over a year in my opinion (at least nothing visible to any of us, and no improvements in actual performance). I gave up and sold my tube on ebay (it works fine for everything except for plex…) and bit the bullet and bought a shield pro. Super disappointed in Plex for not addressing this… (as many others have said, 4K high bitrate content works on other apps on the tube like Kodi, so its clearly a PLEX specific problem with their memory management)

Not that it’s a fix! But I was able to play 4k through the shield tube with casting to the shield, not through the plex app, but just chromecast of the shield.

I was.able to play 11gb monster hunter with no issues
I was ablebke to play 5gb wanda vision with no issues

So I’m leaning on plex app being the issue here, but who knows.

Chiming in to remove all hope.

The stuttering and lockups got so bad that the Tube eventually bricked this past spring. RMAd.

The replacement Tube has the same behavior with 4K remuxes, on both Ethernet and WiFi.

For me the problem existed when Basic Upscaling was enabled in the Shield Settings. Plex app were stuttering and crashing when I tried playback on it, and it was even worse when I switched Refresh Rate Switch to On. When I changed back to AI Medium upscaling, the stuttering and crashes were gone. The stuttering had been existed in Kodi too.

I found an effective way to play 4K remuxes. I tried for weeks, it seems to play 4k remuxes smoothly.
there are my steps:

  1. Uninstall the apps that you rarely use, because the more apps installed, the background fresh is more often, the low memory will cause plex crash;

  2. go “settings - apps - special app access -energy optimization”, turn on all the apps. “energy optimization” will reduce the app’s background fresh, release more memory.

  3. disable the system apps/service that you rarely use. go “settings - apps - see all apps - show system apps”, force stop and disable these apps:
    -Android TV core service
    -Android Accessibility Suit,
-Backdrop, (the screen saver will become black)
-Basic Daydreams (the screen saver will become black)
    -Calendar Storage,
-Chromecast build-in, (Chromecast will be unavailable)
    -Contacts Storage,
    -Gallery,
-Gboard, (asian language input method will be unavailable )
    -Google Backup Transport,
    -live channels,
    -Google calendar Sync,
-Google korean input, google pinyin input … (disable any other language input methods )

Reboot. Disable these system apps/service will release more memory to keep the plex from crashing, but some features will be lost. you can try to enable some feature you need, and check the plex will crash or not.

  1. Do Not use ass/ssa subtitles, the plex is buggy.

  2. Do Not use truehd 7.1, the plex is buggy.

(if plex still crash, you can try to double click home button to delete all backgroud running apps.)

I tested on my shield tv 2019 tube for weeks. these steps really works.

This is a Nvidia Shield TV (v8.1 .xxx > update related issue.)

On the Shield TV Box 2017, Setting the Display to default resolution (4K 59.940Hz)HDR10 ready… stopped the audio stuttering on 7.1 True HD/Dolby Atmos.

Doing the same thing on the Shield 2019, it also stopped the stuttering.

On the Tube set it to 4K 4.2.0 10-bit, also stopped the stuttering… but you lose Dolby Vision.

4K 4.2.2. /4.4.4 12-bit =Stuttering

I am disgusted with my purchase when I see how buggy plex is on the nvidia shield tube. Being a former owner of the 2017 version (which has always run fine without any problems) I am jaded to see that I have regressed.

These steps from @111186 to free up memory by disabling apps worked for me. Thank you for posting.

With the above memory freed and a few additional steps below I am able to direct play truehd atmos 7.1 remuxes with external SRT subtitles & dolby vision without any stuttering.
I am using LG CX and Sonos Arc, so results will likely vary depending on your TV’s/receiver capabilities.

shield settings:

  • Device Pref → Display & Sound: set default resolution to “1080p 23.976 Hz Dolby Vision and HDR10 Ready” (the interface will seem sluggish but it seems to definitely help avoid rate switching delays &glitches for most things)
  • Use refresh rate app from play store to manage the resolution/refresh rate switching (you’ll need to keep accessibility suite app enabled)
  • disable resolution & refresh rate switching in plex settings menu

LG CX (2020) settings

  • eARC: enabled
  • HDMI Input Audio Format: Bitstream
  • Digital Sound Out: Pass Through

I still cannot get PGS/ASS/SSA subtitles to direct play, unfortunately. I have to grab external SRT subtitles for every movie (I use bazarr to do that automatically).
