This one is a new one for me. I’ve installed the TV show ‘HOTEL’ from the 80’s as my 364th TV series on Plex. The naming of the files is correct (Filebot names all my files and they always work with PLEX…mostly…lol) Plex has the series episode titles correct. The episode numbers are correct and match up with the names. However, the episode information is not correct.
Episode 1 of Hotel is ‘Hotel’. The file name and the title match up. (same for every episode.) Yet the episode 1 description is for episode 2. And episode 2 description is for episode 3, etc… Episode 22 and 23 share the episode 23 description. Thus, the ONLY episode named and described correctly is episode 23.
I have never had this issue before when it wasn’t because of a file shift (2 or more episodes in the same file.) But those are usually easy to fix. This issue has me perPLEXed (sorry, had to do that) because it has the episode titles and numbers correct. I looked at TVDB and the episode 1 description is what it should be. But for some reason, PLEX is ignoring it.
I really have no clue how to fix this since there is no option (why is there no option) to FIX individual TV show seasons or episodes like you can do for movies.
Lookup the show on both TheTVDB.com and TheMovieDB.org
Compare the episode listing among these sites with each other.
Are they identical, or is there one which fits your files better?
So TMDB actually has the descriptions wrong for the episodes. So apparently that is the issue. TVDB has them correct. Is there a way to get them from TVDB instead of TMDB? I am alerting TMDB of the error on their system but that (as I have found) can take literally weeks for someone to verify, fix, then update the db info sent out via the api.
You edit the show (the whole show, at it’s highest level),
go to the Advanced tab,
and set “Episode Ordering” to “TheTVDB (Aired)”.
Save
Wait a few seconds. If nothing changes, perform Refresh Metadata of the whole show.
Thanks Otto. WOW, took me a bit to figure out that the ADVANCED tab you were talking about was unter my TV SHOWS 3 dots in the left hand bar. I was clicking all around the HOTEL series and couldn’t find it. Got 1/2 way into a message asking what I was missing…and then thought, I wonder if he meant the top of the ENTIRE series’ menu and not the top of the HOTEL series. And sure enough, there it was.
Thanks again!!! You have always been right on top of it when I have an issue…
Actually not.
You have changed your whole library to use TheTVDB episode ordering now.
But you can do the same for individual shows as well. You just need to make sure to edit the show at it’s highest level (i.e. not at the episode, nor on the season level).
I am using the term “show” for the entirety that consists of all episodes, in all seasons.
To make sure that you are editing the show, just click directly on the show’s title. This is particularly helpful for shows with just one season, when the display of the season has been automatically disabled.
In this situation, it is not immediately apparent whether you’re looking at the season or the whole show.
So I wrote my reply after seeing that I could do the change (very top media level: Manage Library, Edit, Advanced) and then found that it wasn’t working. However, I did what you said but it still didn’t work. Then I found out why…
After changing the AGENT to TheTVDB and Library Default I saved the changes. Then saw the server was busy. Then the (server activity icon) had an arrow on it. So I clicked it and it offered to let me UPGRADE the entire library. So I did that. THEN did the series refresh. Well, I found that this was the wrong thing to do. Because UPGRADING the library changes the Agent to Plex. And apparently, PLEX as the agent uses TMDB as default.
This of course is an assumption (yeah, I know) on my part but the results seem to confirm that. Because when I would upgrade the library the episodes were in the TMDB wrong listings. When I changed it to TheTVDB but then did not upgrade the library the episode information was all correct.
I hope this helps anyone else that may have this issue.
It uses TMDB ordering as default but you can change it. without changing from the Plex TV series agent. Screen below is from the show Firefly which most folks will change it TVDBs DVD order
The old TVBD agent is going to be removed at some point
