Only “Agents (Legacy)” showing after manual Plex install on Synology NAS

Plex web version: Version 4.146.0
Plex installed on Synology Nas version: Version 1.41.7.9823

Hi all,

I recently installed the latest Plex Media Server manually on my Synology NAS (not using Package Center). Plex is working overall, but I have a persistent issue:

Problem: No modern agents, only “Agents (Legacy)”

Even though I’m using the latest Plex version:

  • Plex Web > Settings > Agents only shows:
    Agents (Legacy)
  • Under Settings > Account > Services, I also don’t see OpenSubtitles to link my account.

Additional Info:

  • Plex Web reports:
    Version 4.146.0
  • Server version (Settings > General on server):
    1.41.7.9823
  • Installed Plex manually from .spk file downloaded directly from plex.tv/downloads
  • Plex is installed at:
    `/volume1/plexmediaserver/
  • Only “Agents (Legacy)” appear, even though my movie library shows:
    • Scanner: Plex Movie
    • Agent: Plex Movie

What I Want:

I want Plex to:

  • Use modern agents under Settings instead of Agents (Legacy)
  • In order for me to see the OpenSubtitles under Plex Movie and not Plex Movie (Legacy) as it’s shown now
  • Support automatic subtitle downloads (without manual subtitle search per movie)
  • Allow me to link my OpenSubtitles account from the Web UI

  • I tried installing the version on Synology NAS app library = same issue
  • Tried deleting all my library = same issue
  • Tried with different laptop = same issue
  • Tried different plex account = same issue

My Questions:

  1. Why is my Plex installation stuck showing only “Agents (Legacy)” even though it’s the latest version of Media Server 1.41.7.9823?
  2. How can I enable the modern metadata agents and OpenSubtitles properly?
  3. All YouTube videos of how to set up Plex on Synology show agents the proper way, not agents (legacy) and I followed exactly the same steps they are doing. nothing worked

Thanks in advance for your help! Any guidance is appreciated.

The added “Legacy” is just a better indicator that those settings only apply to the legacy agents, not a change in behavior. The “old” Settings > Agents never affected the modern agents. For the modern agents, all settings are per-library and adjusted via Manage library > Edit > Advanced.

You can’t. As far as I know the OpenSubtitles integration only ever worked with the legacy agents, and even that was removed early last year after some changes by OpenSubtitles broke Plex’s integration with legacy agents.

If you’re looking for automatic subtitle downloads, you’ll have to use something outside of Plex (Bazarr is fairly popular).

Most likely those guides are just outdated, made before Plex released the new agents (or at least before they adjusted the menu text and removed OpenSubtitles integration).
