Only getting playback issues on IPTV/DVR on PC

Hey All,

Super stumped here and I am not the plex server owner but I am the only one experiencing the issues. We have a Live TV/DVR setup and when using that on the PC only, the stream will either freeze and not reload or kick me out to the guide and I have to reselect the channel.

Movies and TV shows are fine and do not experience the above issue. The second issue that IPTV and DVR work perfect on my Samsung TV’s and on that app.

From my limited knowledge and googling there is some issue with my PC and the plex transcoding with each other, looking for my next steps.

Appreciate the help!

The issue is almost certainly that your browser doesn’t support the required video codec (most likely mpeg2 for broadcast TV, not sure for IPTV), forcing the server to transcode. If you’re on Windows or macOS, try the Plex for Windows/Mac or Plex Media Player clients. Either will have much broader codec support than any browser and you’ll likely have a much better experience.

If you’re on Linux, a user on these forums has provided some builds of Plex Media Player:

Hey Philip,

I have used Chrome, Edge, and the Plex App itself on Windows 10.

Which Plex app? Was it from one of the downloads I linked above? There used to be a Plex app in the Windows Store; I don’t believe it was much better than a browser, compatibility-wise.

If you haven’t tried either the Plex for Windows desktop app or Plex Media Player recently, from the download link above, I’d still recommend giving it a shot. Otherwise, I’m not sure what to suggest. Server debug logs may provide some additional insight, but since you don’t own/administer the server, getting its logs may be a challenge.

Hey Phillip, I will uninstall the app I have (it was from plex website) and try yours. What specific logs are you looking for as I know the owner if it continues.

The admin can download the logs from the web client at:
Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Download Logs

Before reproducing the issue an gathering the logs, ensure they have only Debug (not Verbose) logging enabled under:
Settings -> (Settings) General

This is the second “General” section in the list; the first one is for the web client itself.

Hey Philip,

I downloaded the Media Player PC (below Windows Player) as I am 99% sure I had the top one prior and it working fine for the last hour or so. What would be the codec differences in those two?

As far as I know, they’re very similar as far as codec support is concerned. Maybe others can comment on that with more authority.

The primary difference between the apps is the target use case. Plex Media Player is good for HTPC uses as it has a 10-foot TV interface available; it’s also a capable desktop client as well. Plex for Windows is a pure desktop client and is newer. It’s also going to be the better supported option going forward as PMP is being slowly de-emphasized.
