Overwriting manual artist information

TL;DR: When adding an artist that is not known to the plex library metadata source it “guesses” the closest option overwriting the manually entered artist information.

I was adding some music from UwU Underground into my library, it was originally identified as “Various Artists” and “[Unknown Album]”. After correcting this to the correct values the album was kept but the artist was over written by plex to “Digital Underground” whom I already had in my library.

As I had only just added the album to Musicbrainz it has not had time to filter through to the plex metadata source and be an option to match against.

Uwu Underground should be matching fine. It’s listed on Musicbrainz.

Have you configured your library to go only for embedded metadata, or are you using Plex’ regular online metadata?

I added UwU Underground as an artist and the album to musicbrainz less than an hour before adding to plex. So I expect that the metadata source hadn’t picked it up yet
I have the library configured to use the Plex Music scanner & agent with “Prefer local metadata” enabled.

Correct. That’ll usually take several days (2-4 in average).

I think you’re slightly missing the issue I’m asking about.
If I manually change the album artist to UwU Underground, Plex is ignoring this and changing it to Digital Underground a completely different artist.

I think that’s the expected behavior.
Plex will attempt to match the artist and overwrite any manual unlocked edits.
